Flat BBT 4 days in a row?

I have been charting for roughly 5 months now and my charts have consistently varied in temperatures. This month however, I have had 4 identical BBT's in a row! It has been 97.3 for 4 days (currently prior to ovulation). I know the thermometer is working because I'll check later in the day and my temps will be higher.

So this is kind of a 2 part question: 1) Are flat BBT's normal? 2) Should I get a basal thermometer that tracks to the 100th degree? Instead of XX.X get one that does XX.XX ?

Though in TCOYF the author states "Also, it is imperative that it be accurate to within 1/10th degree F. (for example, 97.4), but do not use those that measure to within 1/100TH of a degree (for example, 97.47) since the latter are unnecessary and confusing."

So, conflicting ideas. Thoughts?

Re: Flat BBT 4 days in a row?

  • If I had a BBT that only went to the tenth of a degree I would have a lot of flat lines too. Can you still see your O shift? If so, I wouldn't worry about it. I personally like the hundredth degree BBT, I enjoy all of the spikes in my chart... they feed my chart obsession.

  • Oh, good! I was hoping this wasn't anything to fret over. Yes, I can definitely see my O shift throughout my cycles, this just appeared to be a new phenomenon for this cycle.

That was my only hesitation to get a 100th degree BBT, feeding that good ol' chart obsession. Haha. I think if this keeps up I'll HAVE to do that, I can't stand not seeing variety!

  • Look at my chart, it's been pretty much flat all week.  I've tested it during different times and it's definitely working. Huh?

  • I was just scouring the FF chart gallery for flat temps and it seems like they're most common after O. (Which is not the case for me, boo. But it IS the case for you!) :)

  • Just out of curiosity, what thermometer are you using? If you're using the Walgreens one, throw it out ASAP and run to the nearest store to buy a different one! The Walgreens thermometer totally screwed up my temps & my chart. It has a problem with favorite temps. I bought the Mabis from Walmart because a lot of ladies recommended it but I've also heard the BD brand is good (I think you have to buy that online).
Also, I know it says in TCOYF that you only need to record to the 10th degree but I thought the whole idea of a BBT was to detect the small thermal shift in the 100th degree. I would definitely try a thermometer that temps to the 100th degree to see if it helps you. Also, if you don't have Fertility Friend yet, you should definitely get it! GL to you!
  • You thermometer has a fav temp.  You should def buy a new one.  It happened to me last cycle.  Its not your cycle its def.  without hesitation the thermometer.  After i bought my new one i took my temp at the same time just because with each one, the new and broken, the new showed a diff temp and the broken showed the same temp.  lol

    Good luck!!!

  • Blast. I've been using the BD Basal Digital Therm.

I think this calls for going out and getting a new therm immediately. I don't want favored temps, that's not helpful at allll. Thank you for the suggestion!
