Mid/Upper Back Pain....OUCH!

Ugh...I've been having a drilling pain in my back off and on and it's just getting worse!  It's in the right side of my mid/upper back and near my spine.  I'm wondering if my baby is bruising my ribs b/c it sometimes wraps around front and a few of my upper ribs are sore in the front.    Would I feel that in my back too?  Anyone else with this pain? Whatever it is,  I need a remedy before I go crazy!

Re: Mid/Upper Back Pain....OUCH!

  • I've had the same kind of pain, but on my left side. However, when it starts hurting it doesn't really come and go...it's been so bad I've screamed and cried with it. Massage doesn't help and I can't comfortably sit or lay down. The only remedy I have found is a warm bath. If I can lay back in my tub with water over part of my belly, it seems to take the pressure off. My doctor also recommended a heating pad, so I sometimes lay on that after. The soak in the tub usually helps considerably though.

  • Pain in that part of your back can be kidney related. You may want to give your OB a call just to mention it.
  • I just started getting this exact pain yesterday, too!  It was so bad, I had to find an emergency sub to cover my afternoon.  I called my OB and she said to use the heating pad off and on for 15-20 minutes...it helped.  But being a teacher, it's really tough to find a good position to get me through the day.  Only a few more weeks, we can do it!

  • Mid/upper back pain can be caused by too tight pecs.  The pecs (muscles across the front of your chest) contract and pull on your back.  Ways to stretch: find a corner or a doorway and do wide arm stretches.  Start with your elbows straight out and your arms straight up (like a field goal).  Gently push for 5-10 seconds.  Then raise your arms a couple inches and do it again.  When you feel a really good stretch, you've found the muscles that are pulling on your back and hurting you.  Another good way to stretch your chest is lay on a big exercise ball on your back with it under your mid/upper back.  Just let your arms hang out like a t.  Move them around til you find that good stretch.  Sorry if you know all of this.  :)

  • I'm dealing with mid-upper back pain as I type this.  I sit in a cubical all day so some of it is bad posture and not getting up and walking around enough.  Sometimes a heating pad on low helps, other times a Tylenol also works.  Not much else I can recommend.
  • I had this in the exact same area at about 25 wks, I started to massage the area consistantly (per my chiro advise) and also bought one of those roller pins. I also went in for one adjustment and since all of that I have not had the pain. Now if only I could get rid of the pain in my hips when sleeping!

  • Well glad to know this seems to be common, but hate that you are all feeling this terrible stabbing pain too!  I'll definitely be trying a heating pad and begging LO to please get his cute little feet out of my ribs.

  • I have this too!  I went to my ob and they said it was my muscles and to take tylenol.  I wasn't satisfied with that answer so I went to my PCP, turns out I have a UTI that has gone up into my kidney.  I had no symptoms of an UTI so I would def get it checked out for the possibility.
