Ideas for class / activity for 2.5 year old boy?

We need to get DS1 into a regular activity: a physical outlet, something that's just for him, and the exposure to classmates and a teacher.  He'll start preschool in the fall, but that's too long to wait.

We signed him up for three sessions of gymnastics, and DH took him for the first time last weekend.  Pretty much all DH did was (1) run after DS1 who would spot something that looked more fun, or (2) try to get him to do what the teacher told him to while DS1 resisted.  He just wanted to play (though that was probably due to previously going there for Open Gym, so he thought it was the same thing).  We want him to get used to listening to another authority and all that stuff, but I don't blame him for getting bored...the teacher would demonstrate a routine, and one by one the kids would repeat it.  It was a lot of sitting around.  From observing the difference between the boys and girls at DD's soccer practices (and also common sense), I know that little boys benefit from a different approach. So he needs something with more continuous "action" and maybe not quite so structured?  Something with a period of "free play" incorporated?

I'm looking for something once a week, and if it's during the week it would have to be independent of a parent.  If it was offered on Saturdays, it could be parent participation required.  We're in MoCo but can travel a bit - and we have Gymborees and Little Gyms and other chains near us.  If anyone has any suggestions for specific classes or programs that seem like they'd work, I'd really appreciate it.  I'm going to check out the county's Rec department offerings, but when I checked last year, a lot required a parent and I can't do that with DS2 in tow.

  • How about Tae Kwon Doe, or some other type of martial arts?  I'm not sure if they start *quite* that young - but, there are definitely 3y.o. programs.

Or... you mentioned soccer - why not soccer?  There are 3y.o. classes at the Rockville soccerplex place.

  • My son was like at that age,  We did Gymboree, Soccer Tots and Little Sluggers.  He's still doing Soccer Tots and Little Sluggers.  He listens now (most of the time)  and doesn't just run around in circles. At 2, most of them just run around

  • Thanks for those ideas - I'd never heard of Soccer Tots or Little Sluggers.  I will look into those, since the league DD has played in doesn't start until age three.  And I flaked on martial arts...that's so obvious.  I'm sure he'd love it, seeing how he likes to take down his sister all the time.
