Pointless Poll: Nursery decor/bedding for those with 2+ kids

Curious...

Did/will you buy new bedding and/or redecorate the nursery/crib for each child (not necessarily furniture, just decor/bedding items)?

I have and will again for this third baby.  We did not repaint or anything (moved houses anyway) between baby #1 and baby #2 but I hope to paint for this third baby, and will get new bedding (although minimal) and maybe a couple decor items.  Furniture will probably stay the same although I really want to get a new (inexpensive jenny lind) white crib so we will see.

My friend who is having her first (a boy) registered for all very neutral beige/white baby stuff which I thought was odd since they know the gender.  She mentioned that it was because they won't be able to afford new bedding for a second baby so this one has to be gender neutral.  I realize people don't completely redecorate but I guess I figured a lot of folks may re-do some stuff, at least minimally, or spend $50 on an inexpensive crib set from BRU or something.

Anyway... that was long.  Please share what you have done or will do!

Re: Pointless Poll: Nursery decor/bedding for those with 2+ kids

  • I made the nursery gender neutral and I plan on moving DD into a new room which will be Minnie Mouse theme.  So LO#2 (we're team green) will just use the existing nursery.

ETA:  Aside from ease, other reasons we're doing it this way is to keep the youngest's bedroom next to ours.  DD will be down the hall, on the other side of the stairs after the switch.

Also, it is soo much cheaper.  The crib bedding sets are ridiculously expensive; never again will I pay for one.  W/ DD's room I'm just buying sheets and a couple Minnie Mouse fleece throws (her fav type of blanket)..  MUCH more cost effective.

  • We have a boy and a girl so each child has their own bedding/decor in their nursery. DS's was very "boy" and DD's was very girly. We were/are still renting so have not painted their rooms at all. The walls are just white. However, we did not spend a ton of money on bedding and decor for their rooms.  DS was 17 months old when DD was born so she also got new furniture in a new room and DS stayed in his crib in his room.

I have a friend who bought gender neutral crib bedding when they had their daughter. When she had the second, their daughter got a big girl room with new furniture and bedding/decor. They put their son in the nursery their daughter had used. They could afford new stuff but that is what they chose to do. It was also odd to me because my friend is so girly and very into personalized/monogrammed stuff for both of her kids but it worked for them.

  • We didn't do anything for DS2 other than buy a crib when he was about 6mo - until then he was in the cosleeper, in our bed or in the PNP.  Haven't done a thing for this LO but we are moving in a month or so, so all the boys will get a freshly painted room plus new bedding for the big boys because we'll be getting them twin or full size beds (they are currently in toddler beds).

  • They both got their own nursery bedding- and both (will) have their big kid bedding.

We kept the same crib- it was dark wood and works for either-

DD got new furniture & a full size bed.

I am just now starting to think about Chase's big kid bedding. No rush- just on a decorating kick lately- and throwing ideas around.

  • I didn't find out the sex with either child, so I used the same gender neutral bedding, curtains, furniture, etc. with both of them. In fact, if we hadn't moved I would have left the entire room exactly the same. We even painted the nursery at the new house the exact same color as DD's nursery.

  • We did all new bedding and decor...the only things we are re-using are the crib (if I can find the frickin' hardware) and glider.

    Fun!   What are you thinking?

We already have Travis's setup because he will share Tyler's room and they have bunk beds (unbunked) with matching color block quilts from Target.  I hope to do a bit more decorating in there though before baby arrives (we're doing a space theme).

For baby #3 if it's a boy, I was thinking some madras bedding and drapes in his room, and a gray/blue paint on the walls.  (White crib would pop!  Otherwise we'll use our furniture).  I agree with PP about crib sets being a ripoff.  I'll probably only get sheets and a crib skirt and then coordinate with other things in the room and maybe some short drapes.  We'll see.  My husband isn't going to let me go crazy.

If it's a girl... well, all bets are off.  :P

  • All my kids used the same bedding/decor as newborns/infants. I knew I was having a girl the first time, but wanted to get gender neutral stuff because I wanted to be able to reuse it.

My 3 kids are so close together that it worked out for us. When I was expecting my second child, we moved my DD1 into a full bed and she got all new bedding and furniture. When my DS (#3) was born, DD2 got all new bedding and furniture and eventually moved into a queen. Although, for the first four months, my DS slept in a bassinet and my DD2 was still in the crib, but once she was climbing out we moved her.

When my DS turned 2, he moved out of the crib and got all new bedding. Sadly, my crib, bedding, etc. is gone b/c we are done having kids, but if we had planned on a fourth I would have used it again!

My kids do not last in cribs - #2 and #3 were climbing out at 22 months so getting big beds and new bedding made more sense for us.

  • Is this based on the assumption that you're using the same room for each child? We didn't do that. Finn kept his room, and he was still in a crib when we had Clay, so we did an entirely new nursery. We've updated the rooms a bit as the boys have gotten older, and will continue to do so.
  • No.  I did not.  DS's room was our guest room.  I kept it as the guest room until he was about a year old.  The only difference was that I put his clothes in the closet, and put a diaper changer on the chest at the end of the bed.  He slept in our room until about 8 months, then we put him in with the guest bedroom in the corner.  When he was 2, we got him a toddler bed and passed the guest bed on to my niece. Of course, he still won't sleep in the toddler bed, and is sleeping in the pack n play, as he has been in since he was born.  His room is nice.  He just has a white sheet and a white down comforter on the toddler bed.  He has a nice oriental carpet I got from my grandmother and a big Ikea book case for storing toys, clothes, and books, the chest for storing diapers and changing, along with a mission rocker I also got from my grandmother.  It is kind of a manly little boy room.
  • We didn't move DS out of his room. He got DH's old twin bed and dresser. DD got all of the nursery furniture. When she grows out of it, she will get a twin bed and new dresser too. The glider will move out of her room and she will probably get a bean bag chair for a reading corner like DS has. We never bought bedding sets. Dd is reusing the sheets and has a few more of her own. Her room has its own decorating theme though.

  • My nursery is gender neutral because we were team green with DS. He will get his own big boy bedding when we have our next baby. We could afford to redo the nursery, but the practical side of me thinks I would like to keep it the same and redo it when baby #2 is ready for a big kid room.

  • We didn't even buy a bedding set for DS or really decorate his room because I didn't want to waste the money.  We just bought crib sheets (maybe 3 sheets) and a crib, DD is using both now.  The strollers and car seats we bought for DS were gender neutral so that we could use them again and we did use them for DD.

When DS moved onto the queen mattress I decorated his room and bought him a bedding set.  I'll do the same for DD.

  • I am always impressed with how resourceful and practical the moms on this board are.  I don't know if it's a reflection of being SAHMs or just the random mix of personalities, or perhaps I just live an excessive lifestyle :P (even though I think of myself as somewhat frugal) but anyway... it's nice to hear the different ways that we all approach things.

  • I don't have 2, but we are going to TTC this Spring and I love decor so I have thought about this a lot.  Can I play?  Wink

When DD was a baby, we lived in a different house, so when we moved to this house, it became her big girl room automatically.  We got her a new bed, bedding, but she kept her dresser and curtains.

If the next baby is a girl, we would use the same rocker/recliner and bedding, but would get a new dresser and crib.  DD's crib was a drop down side and she chewed off some of the espresso finish anyways, so we would need something different.  I spent a lot of money on the nursery bedding and it looks brand new, so I have a hard time not using it if we have another girl.  We would get new curtains and accessories though b/c DD kept all of hers.  If we had a boy, we would do new everything, minus the chair.  We painted the walls a neutral beige and it will stay that way.

Oh, and while it's nms, I don't think it's excessive to do new crib bedding and such. I am, however, baffled by a lot of gender specific stuff if you're planning to have more kids. I mean, pink carseat fabric, bumbos, exersaucer, even pink/purple sets of Mega Bloks.... the list goes on and on. I know someone who did this for her first when she planned to have three kids. So she did all girly stuff, then she had a boy next and sold off her girly stuff and bought boy stuff and then #3 was... a girl. Baffles me.

Totally agree with you on this!  I have no problem with neutral stuff for "gear"... anything else doesn't make sense to me unless you're only having one child.

  • I never understood the nursery bedding set... All they use is the sheets! What do y'all do with those themey quilts?

I got convertable furniture that can grow with him, so our next child will need everything.  I love decorating and nurseries are especially fun, so I look forward to it.

  • We painted DS's blue book shelf purple for DD. Other than that, we didn't change a thing. I didn't feel like spending the time and money decorating another nursery while doing a new room for DS. So far, DS has gotten two new rooms, but I have big plans for DD's "big girl" room once she is out of her crib.

  • We did very girl furniture for DD1 but we also did the lifetime crib so that will be her furniture set forever. We are doing the same thing for DD2. We already ordered the furniture but I haven't decided on a paint color which will help determine the rest of the decor. We are in our forever house and these will most likely be their forever rooms unless one of them chooses to move down to the basement when they are much older.

Our quilt is hanging above the crib. That said, the only reason I bought a whole bedding set, instead of just sheets/ruffle is because I got a great deal from a friend.

Our nursery is vintage Winnie the Pooh. I picked the theme when I found some adorable old prints at a thrift store, and then my sister painted us a canvas with my favorite WtP quotes. It's purposefully gender neutral, as is all of our large baby gear, since we plan to have 4+ kids. We plan on moving within a few months of #2's birth, so he/she will sleep in our room until our new house. At that point we'll reuse the nursery decor(possibly with some new girly touches, if needed), and DS will get a big boy room.

  • I got gorgeous bedding for DD1 at my shower (people spent way more than I could have!) so when DD2 was on the way DD1 moved to a twin bed and got bedding for that and DD2 used the crib bedding we had. The only way #3 will get new crib bedding is if we have a boy. Otherwise the same set I used for the first two will be used again. I love that set and have no desire to replace it.

My kids also haven't stayed in the crib very long. DD1 refused to go near it at 16 months. We converted it to a toddler bed and she slept in that for four months until we bought her twin to free the crib for her sister. DD2 got hurt trying to climb out at 17 months, so we converted it for her then. She has slept in her sister's twin bed with her every night since (by choice). So it's only been in use a total of 33 months. I wouldn't consider replacing any of our bedding after only 3 years!

We used the quilt for their second winters, in the crib and then the converted toddler bed. It looked adorable in the bed once it was a toddler bed and made it look finished and neat.

  • We are TTC right now, and if we get pregnant soon, the kids will share a bedroom, because I'm not willing to sacrifice our playroom, and we only use DD's bedroom for sleeping anyway.  Her room is painted green on top, brown on the bottom, with a white chair rail.  Her bedding is pink, green, brown, and white.  If we have a girl, I will just use the same nursery bedding, because I have 2 full sets of it and LOVE the pattern.  If we have a boy, I'll probably just get green sheets for the crib, but I won't repaint the room.

  • Each of our kids has their own bedroom. All painted different colors (B is pink, E is purple, and L is blue and green).

B and E had their own furniture, and L took B's furniture (she was 3y1m when he was born and out of a crib). They all had their own bedding......

  • We had a general-neutral nursery at our 1st house but we sold it and moved when I was pregnant with #2.  We moved in 3 weeks before I gave birth so we didn't have time to do a nursery (he was just in our room and now shares a room with his big bro!)... but I used the same sheets, etc.  I didn't do the whole "bedding set" thing - just sheets, a dust ruffle, and some baby blankets to cover him in.  I didn't see any need to buy anything new.  I had so many sheets so everything was like new.
