Pregnant after a Loss

The doppler and the HB

So, I still can't find the baby's HB on the doppler. :( We tried it tonight for a few minutes and could hear movement though, at least something was moving in there. For all I know it could all be gas bubbles I guess.

Can anyone else hear movement even if they can't find the HB? I just thought I would be able to hear something by now, as long as everything is ok in there.

  • 10w3 days according to what the baby has been measuring. LMP has me at 10w5d today. We started really low, but keep getting my heartbeat. The only other thing I can hear is what sounded exactly like movement on later u/s with Alexander. It's like a little wooshing, but not like the placenta wooshing.

  • Awe well it's still pretty early! You could try putting a pillow underneath your butt? I heard for some women that helps. And you have to go super super low, below panty line low ;) You will hear it soon Hun *hugs*

  • Definitely seems early. I'm a bigger girl and I was well past 12ish weeks when I picked up Sydney's. I can't for the life of me remember when I found it, but I do remember having similar freak outs when I couldn't. All the times we tried I always got the...belly swirling noises? If that makes sense?

  • What really helped me was emptying my bladder.  At 10 weeks it was still a hit or miss as to if I could find the HB.  I think it was 12-13 weeks before I could find it almost daily and sometimes it took 5-10 minutes before I would find it (and it would only be for a few seconds and then baby would move).

  • I couldn't hear it until after 12 weeks either,,,I think it was close to 13 where it was for sure the hb.   I heard those whooshing noises you are talking about and maybe that it is something to do with the baby, but didn't hear the galloping hb till later.

  • I can only find it when I'm lying on the bed with my legs hanging over the side.  It takes me a couple of minutes because Frogger likes to hide behind my artery.  Usually if I move the probe slightly and angle it toward my pelvis, Frogger will come to the probe.  The ultrasound tech referred to Frogger as "the diva" today because it wouldn't stay still long enough for her to get the NT measurement.  I had a blast watching it for an hour while the ultrasound tech kept trying.

I'm thinking too early as well. The first time I could find it, I was almost 12w. Between 12-14w, I had a 50% success rate.

Wait another 3-4 days and then try it again.

Quezzo, not sure of your size, but I am fairly small pre pregnancy and I didn't find it until around 12 weeks. And even then it wasn't consistent. I wouldn't worry too much.

  • I wasn't able to hear DS until almost 15 weeks.  I had an anterior placenta and was "fluffy" to start with, which didn't help.  I also think C liked to hide.  I was able to hear movement though.  You have an appointment coming up soon right?  Can you ask them to do a doppler check or a u/s?

  • I did find mine a little before 10 weeks.. but, it took a LOT of patience.. and, a LOT of lube!!!  My suggestion, stay low.. even though you're just picking up your HB down there, that's where baby is too.. usually, what I do is I place it low on my abdomen, slightly to the right of where my belly button is, and I move it SOOO slowly.. and each time I move it a little, I angle the probe in all different directions.. gotta be super patient though.. usually, takes me anywhere from 5-25 minutes to find it!! Some days, baby lets me find it right away, but then disappears, and nomatter how hard I try to find it again, I can't.. other days, may take a good 20 minutes or more to find it, but once I do I can listen for a good minute or 2 before he/she moves!! They are wiggly beans in there!!

Keep trying, i'm sure you'll get it :)  Oh, and about the lube.. definitely use more!  I read through the troubleshooting guide for the sonoline B online, and that's one of the things they said.. make sure you're using plenty of gel!  I actually use KY Gel instead of the actual ultrasound lube -- it's cheaper and I can get it at the store!! I already used all the lube that came with my doppler!!

    Best of luck!!!

  • I'm sure it's just too early! I have better luck finding the hb when I have a full bladder (which is what they tell you when you do an abdominal u/s too) and use lots of gel (like quarter sized amount or more).

I start out at the top of my hairline and move the probe very slowly across that area, angling the probe slowly at each spot. When I hear the whooshing sound, I usually know I'm close to the baby and then stay in that spot and keep moving it around until I find it. Sometimes it takes a while, sometimes I find it right away.
