reducing number of bottles for an almost 1 yr. old

Our one year appointment isn't for another week and I'm totally confused.

So, DS has just begun eating table foods (late bloomer) - he's doing pretty well but by no means IMO, eating enough calories to be a substitute for formula.  At daycare, where he eats better right now, he'll do cheerios / cereal as snacks, 2 4oz jars / pouches of baby food and then he tries the school lunch  - on a good day he eats one chicken nugget and a few bites of peas or green beans for example.

He is still doing 4-5 bottles a day of 6oz.  I know we need to reduce but do we reduce now so that he's hungry and eats more real food or do we wait to reduce once he's eating more?   He's a little guy so I've always been super anal about his daily intake.

At this time, we have not had much luck with sippy cups either so i'd worry about him not getting enough liquid in him.

Re: reducing number of bottles for an almost 1 yr. old

  • I'm not sure if I can be of too much help but I'll try.  DS really loved sippy cups and started on them at about 6 months.  Have you tried different types of sippy cups?  I know some kids prefer different spouts....we started with a bottle with a different type nipple and it had handles on it like a sippy i think that was a good transition.  Then into a cup with the handles.  Now he takes a regular sippy with or without handles and with any type of spout.    As far as increasing table food goes does he just not LIKE table food?  I'm not sure about how much he has in the way of teeth but eli LOVES graham crackers, toast, etc.  yogurt is also something he will eat alll day...

  • I think we did this in tandem. As in, my kids started eating more and drinking less as a result. But for his age 30 oz does seem like a lot.

Can you maybe start by dropping the number of bottles and keeping the ounces the same and see if the spacing between bottles helps increase his appetite for solids? You may even see him drinking less as a result.

  • Ava will be 10 months old (Holy crap how'd that happen?!) next Wednesday.   I just dropped one of her bottles.   She was drinking 5 6 oz bottles and sometimes she wouldn't even finish them.   I dropped the after morning nap/before lunch bottle.   So far so good.   She is a little piggy when it comes to food though.  She could eat Nicholas under the table.
