I may have only dried my clothes too long, but I opened the dryer and some smoke came out. I'm home alone while DH is at work. I took the clothes out, but I can't move the dryer by myself. Doesn't seem like there's anymore smoke coming out, but now I'm nervous about there being a fire I can't see. I'm keeping an eye on it, not that there's much I can do except call the fire department.
I'm not sure what to do. It smelled like lint, so I don't think it's an electrical fire. It'd be silly to call the fire department for nothing, but I don't know how to check to make sure there isn't a small fire smouldering somewhere. And I don't want to call DH home for nothing.
Re: Smoke in the dryer (NBR)
My DH is a firefighter and they get alot of silly calls, but I don't think this would rank as one of them. It could be nothing but it could be something, if you can't check the dryer yourself, call your FD. Trust me, they won't mind you compared to the non-PG woman who wants them to change the 9volt in her smoke detector or the obese guy who wants to be moved from his bed to his couch....true stories.

sounds like your lint duct might be clogged. not sure about calling the FD but definitely have DH check it out if you can't get back there yourself.
www.applianceassistant.com has a lot of helpful videos about fixing appliances. we used this to fix our dryer just last week!
GL!
EDIT: sorry my pg brain is only half functional at best. I said "lint duct" but I meant the vent duct might be clogged with lint.
It's been 2 hours, and I haven't seen anymore smoke. I also looked outside to make sure there wasn't any smoke coming out of the dryer vent. It looks like there isn't anything smouldering. I texted DH to unhook the dryer when he got home just to make sure.
I called my parents as we got the dryer as a hand-me-down from them, and the dryer is probably nearing 15 years old. They don't suggest trying to fix it or even hooking it back up. So now it looks like we have to go drop $400-500 for a new dryer just days before we have our baby. *sigh* We're cloth diapering, so not having a functioning dryer after baby is born isn't an appealing option.
