TTC after 35

Hello (intro)

Hello Ladies-

I am currently on 2 other boards(mainly the loss board but also TTC after a loss) but I also fit here too. I am 38 almost 39 in March and TTC our 4th baby. We lost our DD#2 Sydney at 38 wks 4 days on 9/30/11. She was 10lb 3 oz and was born still. There is no medical reason she passe dthey think she compressed her cord. I don't agree but that is a whole different story.  It has been a rough road and I am still so heart broken but as we all know time is ticking to have another sweet baby. So I am back on the TTC rollercoaster.

Now my issue I have been doing OPKs and usually I get a positive pretty easily but this month it seems I am not having any O pain at all and it is now CD17 so I am freaking out thinking that I missed another month. We are currently BD every day as that is how it worked with our other DD's pregnancies. I guess my question is has anyone heard that it is possible to not get a positve opk and still ovulate? Maybe no one has the answers and thats ok I still wanted to introduce myself. Even though I have been on this board before a long time ago.

TIA- Heather

Re: Hello (intro)

  • Welcome and I'm sorry for your loss. OPKs have only worked one time for me, meaning I've only gotten a positive one once. But, I have been pregnant twice, although both were miscarriages. So, it's possible to ovulate and not get a positive OPK. You may not be detecting the surge. You could try using 2 or 3 OPKs a day to see if you are surging at a different time of day and for a short time. I believe, but some one can correct me if I'm wrong, that as we get older the surge can last a shorter length of time.

  • I am so sorry for your loss. I can't even imagine your pain.

To answer your other question, yes, you can absolutely ovulate even if you didn't get a positive.  The surge could be very short and if you are only testing once a day, you could definitely miss it.  I have missed it many times but had O confirmed by a P4 test.

  • Thank you ladies. I have been testing with opk 2 times a day and usually do that from CD10 btu this month it seems like ai am not getting a positive now it could truly be the stress making my O later so whoknows but I know geting older it doesn't help the situation. I am really just buying my time until I need to go back to the RE. I was lucky enough to not really need them the last two times but did get testing done with my last pregnancy only to lose her so late in my pregnancy. I know after 35 the struggle to get pregnant is there and that is where I am now worrie dit won't happen since we lost our sweet baby I am so paranoid that my TTC journey could be over i guess losing a baby liek this kind of does that to a person. The pain is terrible and I am lost most days but I am trying to find some positive so we can TTC again.

    Thank you,

    Heather

  • Welcome to the board.  I have to words to address the loss that you have been through.  I'm glad that you here and I hope that your TTC journey is short and you have an uneventful pregancy.

I have also been struggling with OPK this month.  I am on CD16 today, and finally got the faintest of lines this morning.  It's very possible that you may have missed your surge-but it could still be a day or two away.  We have also been BD everyday, just in case we missed it.  Good strategy to try to cover all the bases!

TTC since 10/09 Me-43 DH-44 RE and testing 10/10-11/10, Recommending IVF 1/11 New RE AMA and DOR-DH low motility IVF #1.1 cancelled 3/11 due to poor response IVF #1.2 May 2011, one perfect 8-cell embryo, 3dt-BFN, IVF #2.1 Converted to IUI d/t poor response. • Just wanted to say welcome, and I'm very sorry for your loss.

As others have noted, it's possible to miss your surge with the OPK.  But judging from your Nov. and Dec. charts on FF, you definitely look like you're having ovulatory cycles.  You might consider the CBEFM if you're having trouble detecting your surge; it measures estrogen, too, as well as the incremental LH buildup, so might be able to indicate your peak fertility days more reliably than the OPKs.  (Downside:  it costs $150 or so, plus you have to pay for the sticks.)

  • Welcome and my condolences on your late loss.  I can't even fathom that.  I hope your stay here is S&S!

  • Hello and welcome to the board. I'm so very sorry for your loss. I have also lost a child (we were TTC at the time and have been TTC ever since), and I know how hard it is to wrestle with all of these emotions at once. I hope you are well-supported and taking care of yourself, and good luck getting pg. I hope it happens quickly for you!
