Adoption

Cost of adopting

Hi there, my DH and I are looking into adoption for our next child but we are trying to figure out if it is affordable for us. Can you help by providing how much if realistically cost you during the adoption process and also if you had help affording it (grants/loans/mortgages/etc). also how you went about your adoption process (through an agency, foster to adoption, etc).

Re: Cost of adopting

  • $34K

    We sold a rental property

We used an agency for a domestic infant adoption

We're tossing around the idea of #2. We plan to use an agency again (most likely, though that may change). We're currently planning to use the $ from DH's (generous) company adoption reimbursement program to afford it.

Married on 3.20.2004. It took 30 month, 2 failed adoptions and IVF for our first miracle. We have had 9 foster kids since he was born and started the domestic adoption process when he was 10 month old, we had 4 failed matches in that time. After our daughter was born we brought her home and spent 2 weeks fearing we might lose her because of complications that came up. But Praise God all went through and she is ours forever! • We adopted from Canada a identified child that was in foster care. We only paid for our cost which was $7,000. We saved for 2 years all vacation money in order to do. We received all of it back on our taxed with the adoption credit.
  • We took out a loan.

  • We went through an agency and adopted a child born to a local couple.  Our costs were around $30k.  The agency told us that was a little bit higher than they normally see because of the time the birthmother needed of them.

this exactly. My son is biracial (like my husband and i) and we adopted through an agency that had fees that are race and income based.

MH owns a business, we took a draw from the company operating account. It will take us about 6 months to recover and get the operating account back to the level we like it to be.

  • $9,500.  Not counting homestudy and travel.  We went with a very small Christian agency with sliding scale fees.  Our son is biracial, so that allowed us to adopt out-of-state with them, because they need more parents willing to do minority adoptions.  Otherwise you have to be a TN resident.  We raised about $6,000 through fundraisers.
  • We haven't completed the adoption process yet, but we're doing domestic infant adoption with a national agency. The cost is expected to be about $25K. We just bought our house so we don't have any equity that we can take, but we've been saving all our pennies and have about 2/3 of it. We have to pay $18K up front and then the remainder at placement. We're not sure where that money is going to come from, but we're just putting our faith out there that we'll be able to do it. (We'll borrow from credit cards if we need to, but I hope we don't!)

    Good luck!
