Fighting diaper changes, car seats, etc

DD is 9 months old and for the past couple of months has been screaming bloody murder when we change her diaper, put her in her car seat, put her in her high chair, put her jammies on after her bath, etc. Lately she's added arching her back and twisting wildly to get out of our arms or the changing table, carseat, etc. Any ideas how to make these things go a bit more smoothly? We've tried singing songs while doing things, ignoring the behavior, giving her a toy to distract her - but nothing has seemed to make much difference so far. Any ideas are welcome!

  • Good to know that it is not just my 9 month old baby doing these things. The only thing that has worked for me is bribing DS with my iPhone.

  • From my experience nannying a family with 4 little ones (not yet my own), I find that keys are the best distraction EVER! However sometimes just earplugs are all you can do... GL

  • Try talking to your LO, telling him what you're going to do. "Ask" him - i.e. do you want to change your diaper or eat dinner? And although he won't answer, you're giving him something to think about it and making it seem like you're taking his opinion into account (which you can do for real once he answers you). If for example you start to put him in his high chair and he starts to cry, take him out and say, ok 2 more minutes of play (or whatever he was doing). Then again "time fo your high chair" and if he still cries "I already gave you 2 more minutes, it's time now" and then try to distract "and what should we eat first?", etc.

  • Christmas lights above the changing table work magic!  The rest...well, we just live with the screaching.
