Breastfeeding

question about pumping times

I am EBF my LO - she is almost 8 weeks old now.  I have been trying to pump at least once a day to start freezing breastmilk and offer a bottle at least once a week.

How frequently can I pump between feedings without depleting the supply for her next feeding? She usually feeds about every 3 hours, but feeds up to an hour each time.  SO...am I safe pumping after the feeding and still know she'll get enough when the next feeding happens?  My friend says my body will make enough for her (supply and demand), but I am nervous about her not getting enough at the feeding after the pumping time.

I'd like to pump several times a day, if I can.

THANKS!

Re: question about pumping times

  • Your breasts never completly empty when you pump because nothing is as efficient as your LO.  If she is feeding, your body will produce more milk to meet her demands.  I usually pump about 45 minutes to an hour after feeding my DD and have stashed away quite a bit of milk by doing this.

  • Check out www.kellymom.com - there is a lot of good info there.  When you pump, you are sending a message to your body to make more milk.  So the first times you pump, you may not get as much.  After you have pumped for several days, you will get more b/c your body is responding to the request.

If you pump just once a day, ~1 hour after the first morning feeding, every day, you will slowly get more and more at that time.  Since your LO is taking an hour to eat, I'd pump ~1 hour after she's is done.
