No 'poo and static

I have been lurking on this board because I have been wanting to try the no 'poo method and I have gotten some great info (thanks!). Three days ago I washed with baking soda and ACV and from the start things seemed to be going well. I have been rinsing each day in between with just water (no ACV or conditioner) and I have not used ANY products on my hair (I used to use mousse and hairspray and just went cold turkey). My hair has been getting increasingly oily, which is to be expected because I know oil production has to readjust but my very long hair is greasy AND static-y at the same time. Such a weird combo and the feeling is driving me nuts (there is tons of static even when it's in a ponytail).

Any suggestions on how to fight static without using products? Should I use a little ACV on the ends on just my rinsing-with-water days or maybe a little of my DD's California Baby conditioner?

Also, how long will it take to comfortably no 'poo once a week? I think 3-4 days is my max right now.

TIA!!!

Re: No 'poo and static

  • Hmmm...I haven't had that problem with no-poo, but I went through the process of changing to no-poo in late summer.  Maybe it just wasn't an issue that particular time of year.  I have had static issues in the past when I was using regular shampoo/conditioner and blow drying a lot in the winter time though, and I found that doing a cold water rinse helped reduce the static by quite a bit.  Maybe something to try???

  • I lurk here often and get great ideas including no 'poo which I've been doing for a month. I do the rinse every other day and have also noticed more static and what has helped me is to run a little water on my brush, shake it off, and then brush my hair. HTH.

  • I've been doing this for over four years now, it took a good six months for my hair to adjust.  I had given up on the baking soda and ACV about two months into my experiment and have just used water ever since.

The oiliness is just a matter of your hair adjusting, it will get better naturally, but for now, a ponytail may be your best friend.

As for the static, in the beginning I switched to natural bristles brushes and tried brushing the oil from my roots down to the ends.  I found this actually worked best when I used a hairdryer as the warm air seemed to help get the oil moving.

Now that the oil is balanced in my hair, when I have static my method is to spread virgin coconut oil on my hands (NOT a lot), usually I just the little bit that's left on my hands after moisturizing, and spread is on the ends of my hair.  Less is definitely more with this approach.

  • You can also mix honey (about a tbs) into the b/s mixture and that should help with the static.
