July 2012 Moms

For the moms who curse...

I'm definitely one of them, but was just wondering what the different opinions are about cursing around a baby/child? I hear some people stop as soon as they find out they're pregnant, and some will say anything and everything around their kids. What do you guys think? I'm somewhere in between. I slip up or say things sometimes, but I at least try and keep my voice down about it when I do.

Re: For the moms who curse...

  • No ones perfect. I try not to swear in front of them. Sometimes it slips out in conversation if I'm on the phone but I usually can only talk on the phone when the kids are sleeping anyways. I have dropped things or gotten hurt & said "damn" but so far they haven't repeated but I def. try to watch it more now that I have 2 little parrots in the house. I also monitor the radio stations ever since Amber started singing Nicki Minaj and asking for her "boom boom" song.

  • Are you posting this cuz I just said Damn in my response to your post???   LMAO!

For DD, we reduced cussing when she was born and fully stopped by the time she was 1-ish. I cuss now like a sailor when my DD is at school. It makes me giggle like I'm 12 and shouldn't be saying those words. Heehee.

  • I am like a sailor when it comes to cursing!  I know it isn't great, but I figure I can have a year to get it out of my system.  Once LO is here, I will be trying desperately to stop!

I have heard parents in the street using ridiculous language with kids of all ages and I think it teaches kids how to interact.  I would hate to hear that  my kid was the once talking to someone else like that...it would be worse if it came back at me!

Kids don't know the meanings/social cues etc.  I think deferring from cursing will just hopefully save me from a shout of F&*K from LO in church or something.

LOL! No, I'm posting it because I said it in your post first and it made me think haha

And yeah I have a lot of navy friends who I can make blush with my language, so "cuss like a sailor" is minor for me haha. DH doesn't cuss at all, so I always say I do it enough for the both of us. But when his son is around, I'm somehow amazing at stopping myself. Dunno how I do it.

Let me tell you that cursing is all fun and games until your kid yells "motherfuccker!!" in line at the target.

i have a horrible sense of humor and curse like the above mentioned mofo, but when my kid has told the dog to "suck a big fatcock" and says "bullshits momma" when i tell her to put her coat on, cursing gets old real quick. I still curse occasionally but i have really worked hard on stopping. The only thing I need is for daycare to tell me my kid is calling all the other kids in the room mofos.

Lol. I have some pretty comparable stories.

Sorry that just made me laugh so hard! I laugh now but I know I won't later. I'm waiting for my SS to pick up on something,  but thankfully the worst thing he's said is "stupid".

  • I have cleaned up my language a bit since becoming pregnant. But only a tiny bit. I will plan on trying to remember there are little ears around once baby is born, and hopefully I will create good habits before the baby is old enough to understand and learn the words. I think it will come naturally as I already watch my mouth in front of kids and it comes easy- I have been a nanny for years.

  • Fucck, I'll try to keep it under control, but I know it'll be tough. I said "shiit" twice the other night while I was sitting next to what looked like a nine year-old girl. I saw the mom give me a couple looks and I tried to apologize, but it's tough to stop. I do the same thing around my BFF and her almost three year-old who is repeating everything. I don't catch myself until it's too late most of the time. I plan to start calming it down now as much as I can just to try to lessen the habit. But I know I'll have to make up some kind of response for when the kid eventually asks why I'm allowed to say those words and he's not.

  • F%^& that sh$%!

Seriously, I swear a lot, including in front of some coworkers, but not in front of supervisors or people I think would be offended. DH and I will tone it down until our kid is old enough to understand our swearing "philosophy" so to speak. He works with kids all day so he's able to shut it off and on pretty easily.

  • UGH. this is gonna be a challenge! I told DH today that baby can start to hear around 16-18 weeks, and his response was "well you're gonna have to stop yelling and cussing at me then". oops...

I don't cuss at my parent's house, but when I drop something or slip, something usually comes out. I plan on not cussing around baby/kids, though, just to set an example of how I want them to act. And it irks me when moms cuss their kids out in public...

  • my most used curse word is ***!!!  Well when my daughther, who's 21 months old, throws her tantrums or is watching football with her dad she'll yell it out....Oooo Mmmmm Gggggg -- bad mom bad mom!!! Embarrassed

  • My mom used to curse like crazy, so I picked it up as a teenager. My friends still curse like sailors (well, like teenagers), but once I became a teacher I had to work so hard to keep my language clean that I sort of lost the desire to curse! My DH doesn't do it so it's not hard to stay clean at home. I'd always lecture my students about having a strong enough vocabulary to avoid cursing, so I imagine it would be the same for my kids...
