Really Creepy....WWYD?

My neighbor just had a new roof put on today.  I live in a zero lot-line (basically like a townhouse or duplex but with 3 ft of firewall between the houses so we dont technically share a wall, but the houses are attached). The houses are built into a hill, so the deck off the living room is actually a full story off the ground because it is in the back of the house.....DH parks his car under the deck.

Anyways, the roofers got a bunch of debris on my deck.  I anticipated putting in a phone call later in the day to complain if they did not clean it up since you can not access the deck from the ground.  I was heating up my lunch and when I walked back into to the living room there was a man on my deck picking up the trash! While I appreciate that they cleaned up the mess, I am really freaked out that he just used his ladder to get up on my deck without checking to see if anyone was home!

I immediatly went outside to speak to the supervisor who was unaware of the situation and he promptly went back to talk to the guy who got up on my deck. I am still pretty freaked out though.....maybe I watch too much Lifetime or SVU, but that was just not ok.

I am debating on whether or not to call the company and complain.  I mean, what if I was naked or BFing in my living room?  What if the deck was structurally unsafe and he had fallen?  Why did they not attempt to see if I was home before trespassing? WWYD??

  • That is definitely not okay! I'd be freaked out too and would call to complain. I wouldn't call and be mad b/c they should clean up their mess but they obviously need some rules when it comes to where the mess is, but I'd let them know that it scared you and that something should be done!

  • I probably would have done nothing since I knew what he was doing. However, I would have been quietly annoyed and would have thought about doing what you did. Instead of actually doing it I would have hid on the other side of the house. lol.

  • I personally think you are overreacting.  That is what they would have done probably had you called to request they clean up their mess.  I get he had to use a ladder, and that's odd that he just did that.  However, I am assuming it was daytime and perhaps they assumed no one was home or they did not want to bother you.

I think had they knocked they would have asked to enter through your house or at least maybe they would expect you to offer and I think I would have been more creeped out to let them through my house, but I also would not want to make them climb a ladder when I could easily let them through.

    Just my opinion.

  • To be honest, none of that would have even crossed my mind but I can understand why it might bother you.  I probably would have left it at talking to the supervisor like you did.

  • eh, I'm torn here. While I think they should have knocked first to make sure no one was home, I think it's good they took the initiative to clean it rather than leave you a mess.

  • I probably wouldn't call because he was trying to do the right thing.  But like you, I get creeped out by things and my imagination goes wild and everthing scares me.  Just make sure your door is locked whenever you have it closed.

  • This happened to me last year and I WAS naked! I was horrifired! We live in a condo (we own it) and the guy was doing something with our windows, I had no idea that he was going to be there and neither did DH. I just let it go and didn't say anything, but I was mortified.

If I were you I wouldn't complain, he was being nice and trying to pick up the trash. Yes, he was trespassing but since your houses are connected he probably didn't even think twice about it. Just my opinion!

  • Honestly, it probably wouldn't have even crossed my mind to be bothered by this. In fact, I would have probably waved or thanked the guy. (I get why it DOES bother you, but I think speaking to the supervisor was the appropriate course of action and anything else would be overboard.)

  • I'd be ticked but I don't think it's creepy.  I think he was doing the right thing and just didn't give a thought that someone would be home during the day.

LoL! This is totally me. I'm one of those people that will army crawl out of the room if I see people I don't know coming to my front door!

This.  It wouldn't have bothered me but I can understand where you are coming from.

I would just leave it now that you talked to the supervisor.

This.  I wouldn't have been bothered at all but I can understand how someone might.

I would just leave it since you've talked to the supervisor already.

  • You said you spoke with the supervisor.  I think that's plenty and would not call the company.  I get why you're upset, but it sounds like this will be a one time occurrence.  No need to make anything bigger out of it.

I do that too. I don't usually answer the door if DH isn't home and I don't know who it is.

  • I probably wouldn't have been annoyed, more like "Oh good, now I don't have to call the company to complain".  And, I know I wouldn't have gone to speak to the supervisor about it.  But, that's just me, dh on the other hand would've been super pissed.  He probably would've talked to the supervisor and called the company to complain.  He hates having people on our property.

I won't answer the door if DH isn't home either.... And if I need something in the home worked on I have my dad come over and stay with me while they are there...
