Re: ***First Year Check-In***
Continued T&P to Caglebaby & Sarah. I hope you were able to get some answers in Temple (I think that's where y'all went).
QOTW - hahahahaha! I have given up on every "I never". I think the biggest one was that I would never let him sleep in our bed. Well as we all know, sleep deprivation is an evil witch. It started out that I was afraid I was going to drop him b/c I was so freaking tired. I just needed to lay down. Now it is, he'll sleep longer if he is next to me. This gives DH anywhere from a millisecond to 30 minutes of extra sleep (he does the morning duties with him). There are so many former "I nevers" that I barely remember anymore. I said I'd never even have the bassinet in our room and wouldn't have the TV on when he was around. I should have known myself better than that.
Updates - Felix has an ear infection and has been sick since last Thursday. Doctor thinks RSV and said the worst day is the 4th day, which was Monday. Boy, Monday was rough. When I got home yesterday he was in much better spirits and the babysitter said that he didn't cry at all. He is still really snotty and coughing a lot, but doesn't cough so much he gags too much anymore. It makes me so, so sad that he got sick. :-( We were going to start some solids this past weekend but skipped it since he was sick. At this point, I'm just going to wait until he is 6 months, which is next Friday.
Hi! Can you add us to the list even though we are almost at a year?
amycathy - ds (Andrew) 3/18/11
Today is Andrew's 10-month birthday and he is doing fabulous. He is crawling everywhere and saying dada to everything (cat, dog, random strangers... etc). He is always on the go and I wouldn't be surprised if he is walking soon. He loves people and is such a happy baby. We are on track with most of his developmental skills but are having a little delay on the pincer grasp for picking up food with his small hand.
QOTW: I couldn't even list all the i never's that i gave up on because before he was born, I was never going to do so much but now in reality, I'll do whatever it takes to keep him happy & healthy and get us some sleep.
I'm sorry he's been so sick, brooke. :-(
QOTW: The big one we stuck with was never bedsharing. Lord knows there have been a million times I would have loved to just lay down with him to nurse him to sleep or snuggle, but we feel strongly about it and I never have. Other than that, I can't really remember--I knew better than to take a "never" stance on very many topics.
Update: He's in a full-blown bottle strike. He took zero (ZERO) ounces at school on Friday and on Tuesday. We've stopped sending thawed milk, sent a new kind of bottle today, and I'm going at noon to nurse him if he refused his morning bottle again. He's been waking up every night around 11 p.m. in full tears. I think he's got a tooth coming in, so we're never sure if he's just in pain or hungry or what. Suck.
updates: I'm at home with a sick DS today. RSV is going around his classroom, but i'm not sure if that's what he has. he's got a low fever, around 100, snotty nose and a cough.
QOTW: i'm not sure that i ever had any "i nevers" at least none that i can think of.
rssn - sorry about the bottle strike, i hope you find something that works soon!
rssnlvr: my sympathies. i hope he comes around really soon. maybe it's just from the tooth coming in?
what is RSV? (guess i can go google it.)
QOTW: i didn't really have "i nevers" for this infant stage. we'll see about when he's a toddler though. i did try to avoid giving him a pacifier (broke that one at the hospital) and avoid letting him watch tv. pretty tough when we have the tv on all the time as just background noise.
Update: he's starting to take bottles at daycare! no luck at home though, which frightens me if i have to start traveling for work again soon.
besides that, he's got major congestion and snot. no fever though. he figured out how to roll over the other day but hasn't done it again since. he goes in for his 4 month shots on friday. and woo hoo! my reduced schedule got approved for a month.
QOTW: I don't know that I had many "I nevers" for the infant stage. Maybe an I never thought I'd let him CIO this early but I am and its working and I can sleep. YAY!
Update: SO much to update! He will be 6m on Friday and starting to play with food. He's obsessed with drinking out of every cup and bottle (water, champagne, beer whatever bottle) he sees. Yesterday I sent him to DC with his straw cup and some cut veggies and he sat with the big kids to eat lunch. They all thought it was the greatest thing ever. Last night was spaghetti and he had a blast. He wouldn't put any in his mouth, though, until I handed him a spoon, which he promptly shoved in.
There is teething going on. Ugh!
We have PT today for his neck and I'm scared for his 6m appt on Friday because I noticed today that his jaw is out of alignment. We were ok living with is lumpy head, but I we might end up with a helmet because of his jaw. when he bites down, his bottom jaw is not level horozonitally. HIs right side has a gap between his gums in the back and the left doesn't. I know this will cause havoc when his teeth all come in and I don't want to worry about jaw surgery then. Dang foreceps!!
QOTW: Same as Rssn, we've said we'd never bedshare, and we're sticking strong to that, as far as the baby is concerned. In fact, like DS1, the baby has slept in his crib in his own room since the day we brought him home. (The toddler, however, has taken to waking up and coming to our bed around 0430-0500 for some reason. We're working on getting him out of that habit). I also didn't make too many "I'll never" promises so I can't think of much that we've broken as far as the baby is concerned (yet!).
Update: I think I missed the update last week, which is when I would have told y'all that my 3-week-old is sick. :-( He caught a cold, and I took him to the pedi immediately, who said... he has a cold. Told us what to watch for in case it becomes RSV, but luckily it seems to just be a cruddy cold and cough. Now he's 4 weeks old, nose has mostly cleared up and his cough sounds like it's improving. But uuuggghh, I hate that he was sick so early! I halfway expected it though, seeing as he was born in December and his big brother goes to preschool!
Other than that, he's still a little pork chop - weighed in at 10lbs, 4oz last week when he was 3wks old, and he looks even more huge this week! He looks like he's about 2-3 months old, IMO. He's completely outgrown all his NB clothes. He's staying awake longer during the day, and we can see him becoming more aware and alert and expressive. His head control is getting SO good, and we've gotten a couple little glimmers of smiles recently. He LOVES his big brother and turns his head toward his voice whenever he hears it, and just watches him whenever he's close. He's super sweet and snuggly, and (knocking on wood), is a great sleeper - usually sleeps from about 10-11pm(ish) till 430am(ish) before waking to eat, then sleeps another 4 hours after that.
When 3 Became 4
QOTW: I've been around this board long enough to not have any "I nevers" actually i take that back. I'm totally anti-kid-leash. HATE those things. but that's not an infant I'll never. I didn't intend to bed-share. but nights like last night, he was up 3 times before 11PM... yea this mama works full-time. just can't do it.
Confession: I'm obsessing and *stressing* about his first birthday. i realize how absurd this is. all these stupid party website and pinterest are giving me a serious complex though. I can barely keep my house clean much less throw a fantastic first birthday! gah!
Update: almost positive that DS has seasonal allergies. SUCK. i feel so bad for him. he's so congested and has a runny nose right now = drainage = cough. he's also teething like crazy (looks like his top two are also under the surface). he refused a bottle at daycare yesterday afternoon which he's never done. poor babe just doesn't feel good right now. and i'm HATING that i'm working these days. i so desperately wish i could just be home with him
hope everyone gets/feels better with being sick, bottle strikes and lumpy heads!
QOTW: i said i would never give my baby a bottle that was propped up. my sister did it all the time and i thought she was so lazy. oops, we do it now and dd doesn't seem to mind. she sort of holds onto the bottle and we're right there when she's drinking.
Updates: we're doing great, more consistent rolling. eating lots of purees and sucking on cheese and veggies, although she doesn't really get the pick up food idea so i ended up eating all the avocado i cut up for her. eyes and ears are clear but we are traveling to MD this weekend where apparently it's cold and everyone is sick. hopefully she stays healthy!
Thanks for the sympathy, Rssn. It sucks so bad when your baby is sick, as all the mamas know. I'm sorry about the complete bottle strike, but am glad you get to go nurse him at noon (if necessary, of course).
Much love to all the kiddos, it sounds like everyone has the winter-allergy snotty nose and cough going on. :-( SarahPLiz - hope the jaw thing for Sparky isn't too bad!
I thought of one "I never" that I probably won't give up on (aaaand now I just jinxed myself!) - CIO. Since I gave in to the occasional bedsharing, I doubt I'll end up giving in to the CIO. I LOVE cuddling with him, and when he wakes me up wanting to nurse it is so, so sweet and adorable, but my body is so sore these days since I don't move a muscle when he's next to me. I'm so mad that I gave in because now there are some nights that he will.not.sleep. unless he is next to me. Ugh.
Update - Doing good, growing like a weed! We're going to try some cereal this weekend. I'm hoping he likes it! I think we are in the hell throes of teeth with all the drool and occasional "unable to cope with life" fits he has where all he wants to do is be held and cuddled. Somedays I don't mind, but its hard with a toddler when DH is gone (like tonight!)
QOTW - Hmmm its hard to think of any because he's the second kid. We had all our trials and errors with the first one! I had ZERO expectations for the second one. Like rssn, we've never ever bedshared as I had NO desire to. Ummmm....I probably said he wouldn't still be sleeping in the RnP....but he is. We need to transition him to laying flat so we can move him upstairs. I have also said "I'd never" move him upstairs until he's STTN. He's only waking up once, but still....I only can deal with one awake child. Not two. DD can have all the quiet upstairs for herself until he reliably STTN.
