Did you hear about the uproar about CB on FB?

So on the CB's FB page today the founder announced they are now using Sodium Benzoate and lots of moms went crazy over this news. I started thinking well if they are only using it on some products why not just avoid those and continue using the rest? But some people mentioned how they are changing a lot of their products while stating their products won't ever change and everything is and will be all natural...how can a chemical be natural??? And so I started to read the ingredients on all of my CB products. I found out that on the Super Sensitive Lotion the second ingredient next to water is Cetyl Alcohol, I looked it up on the EGW's Cosmetic Database and turn out it is "expected to be toxic"!!! DS has eczema and I can't just use anything, I'm no chemist but "alcohol" can't be good!

If you use a natural/organic baby product--especially if it's unscented, will you please recommend it???

  • I had not heard that :( We currently use Loving Naturals and so far I like it.

  • I use organic coconut oil to moisturize Joy's skin.

    To wash/shampoo I use Dr. Bronner's.

  • I second the coconut oil and Dr. Bonners.  I also use coconut oil as a CD safe diaper rash ointment.  I've only had to use it a couple of times for that, but it's worked great so far.

You might want to check to see if the ingredients on your bottle are the same that EWG has listed in their database.  Some people on California Baby's FB page said they're all outdated because they recently changed their formulas.

This! the problem is the "new" formula lists Calendula as like the 8th ingredient, also the new formula even has canola oil in it! We still have some of the old formula and it has worked wonder for DS's eczema but I'm sad to have to start looking at alternatives!

I've hear Dr. B's can dry baby's skin??? I had heard about coconut oil but I bought a "refined" version and it doesn't even smell like coconut, I used it a couple times and I think it made DS's eczema flare up. The jar is so big and I don't want to buy another one and have this one go to waste, I use it as my body moisturizer after the shower and it works OK so far. I might try the unrefined organic version down the road.

  • Le sigh.  I use their conditioner for DD's hair and I'm bummed.  Guess I'm headed over to EMAB's FB page to see if a conditioner is in the works for them (we use their baby products almost exclusively).  There is no way that we can go w/o conditioner....DD has thick hair down past her shoulder blades.

Coconut oil is also great for cooking if you don't want to waste it.

I can't find an unscented shampoo listed on their site.   Does anyone have a sensitive/unscented recommendation?

  • I don't have any recommendations, but I checked the bottle of CB Calming Shampoo and Body Wash that I just bought for my daughter last week and it has the preservative listed as well. I didn't even think to check the ingredients since it was CB. BOO!

They do have an unscented one, you have to go to the "baby" section then to the left it says "mama also recommends" and it's there.

  • Well, California Baby claims that they did not change their formula, but the ingredients have changed as has the concentration of the calendula. Apparently, they're caught up in an argument of semantics. I saw this on Friday and have been watching in awe as the PR debacle has unfolded.

Apparently, they've brought calendula extraction in house, and they now use a more concentrated calendula extract but have moved it down the list in the ingredients. They've also added essential oils, and a lot of users are complaining about a burning sensation from the new formula. CB has all but called the customers crazy. They've also added sodium benzoate as a preservative to a number of their products and some now contain alcohol - which seems counterintuitive for sensitive skin and eczema as alcohol is drying. Hmm, don't get it.

Anyway, I echo the recommendation for Loving Naturals - I use the unscented Adorable Baby wash on my kids.

  • I'm loving the Live Clean Baby baby bath and shampoo/baby wash that I got BOGO at Walgreens. They're a Canadian brand and seem to use all good stuff. I wish I could get more than just their baby products. https://live-clean.com/default.aspx
