Stupid question about second molars

M has been in a really bad state for a couple of days, but nothing is obviously wrong (no obvious illness, no fever). He was up until 1 am last night crying (I am a tired mama today). He's putting his fingers in his mouth a lot, and there's been some drooling, which makes me wonder if his last set of teeth are coming in. It's a little early, but he's gotten most of his teeth earlier than average.

Here's the stupid question: How did you tell when the second molars were coming in? They're far enough back in his mouth that I can't really see back there, and Lord knows I'm not putting my fingers in his mouth, because he would probably bite me. I don't have much to go on, but I can't think of what else it could be.

Re: Stupid question about second molars

  • I'm not sure if you can really tell when those molars come in.  If my kids cry for seemingly no reason it usually means ear infection, which for them is usually caused by teething - drool and snot gets trapped in their heads, etc.  I hate teething.

Wife, Musician, Fed, WW-er, and Mom of three little kids - not necessarily in that order.

  • I never knew when DD's last molars came in. I think DS is getting his (like yours, he was an early teether, by 18mo he had all his teeth except the 2-3yr old molars) b/c he is doing the same, lots of drool and fingers in mouth. Or maybe not, who knows?!?
  • That sounds a lot like C when his 2 year molars came in, though it was closer to his 2nd bday. He was really awful about them, but he has always been a slow, painful teether. Luckily, I could convince him to let me feel his back gums to make sure they were coming in, usually while brushing his teeth and then we dosed with Motrin before bed (though I've already admitted that my kid is a Motrin addict, so take that advice with a grain of salt.).
  • It does sound like teething if he's drooling a lot and putting his hands in his mouth. We've been dealing with that too. The drooling got so bad last week that I had bibs on the LOs all day long b/c their shirts were getting so gross, which looked ridiculous on toddlers but I couldn't handle the soaking clothes. It seems to come in fits and spurts b/c this week, they're back to normal.

My kid is also a Motrin addict. If we leave the bottle sitting out in the bathroom, he will point to it and ask for it, and then he gets mad if we say no. I'm glad it's not a struggle to give him medicine, but it's kind of ridiculous.

DH didn't give him motrin this morning, so I'm a little worried about how he's doing at daycare. Poor kid.

Haha! So is my DD2.  She takes it like a champ Embarrassed  If it goes on for more than a couple days, I'd bring him in just to get an ear check.  DD1s second molars came in super early, but then she had almost all her teeth by 12 months.
