Anyone used this carrier?

Lurker with a question about the Munchkin Jelly Bean carrier. Anyone used it? Is it worth the $ or should I look at another? I didn't usa any w/ DD 1 but DD 2 loves being held and I need hands free sometimes so I thought I'd ask the experts!

  • I'd recommend a ring sling instead. I think it's easier to have something totally adjustable.

Agree. I have a pouch and never use it. I use my ring sling all the time because I can make it work better (like, over my coat or not over my coat, on my hip or in a front carry). https://www.sleepingbaby.net/basics.php  get good reviews and start at $32.

  • How about the Balboa Baby Adjustable Sling? I have a $25 Target gift car which I'm hoping to use toward a carrier of some sort. They also have Peanut Shell slings.

  • I had Target GCs for LO and they didn't have anything that I thought was worth it.

I looked at the promo pictures for Peanut Shell and Balboa and none of those babies are being worn properly for baby's safety and mom's back health. Baby should be high enough to kiss, with face visible, and chin is not tucked to baby's chest. If a carrier cannot allow a parent to do that, it isn't a good carrier. If the models are not doing proper carries under the maker's watchful eye, that tells me it is not a reputable brand or carrier.

Could you do something like use the Target GC for groceries and then spend the money saved on groceries for toward a good, used carrier off Craiglist or The Baby Wearer or at a consignment store? We don't really shop at Target, so I actually bartered our Target gift cards with a local mom for a good carrier her kids had grown out of, LOL!

I feel like carriers are truly a "get what you pay for" item and cheap ones just are not worth it because the low quality makes them not comfortable. And if a carrier isn't comfortable, it just isn't going to get used much, which means money wasted.

Pouches are not--IMO--a reasonable option for babywearing other than just for a few minutes here and there. The other ones you mention are ring slings, which have windows of being helpful--little babies and then babies who can support their own weight, and toddlers who want up and down. But, I personally don't like them as an everyday carrier (though others do). If you are sold on the idea of a ring sling, I would look for a used Maya Wrap, though. They have a good reputation for comfort, supportiveness, and durability and can be adjusted to wear baby properly.

If you are open to other ideas, soft-structured carriers like Ergo and Beco are pretty mainstream (especially Ergo).

Other things you might find on CL: a used Moby wrap will be good until baby is about 15 lbs. If you like wrapping and want to wrap from NB to toddler, a woven wrap is a good bet. There also are mai tais (Asian-style carrier) which are pretty easy to use.  For used wraps and MT's, check out The Baby Wearer website.
