Better have good betas after that needly torture.

***WARNING: If you get queasy hearing about needles, blood, and/or vomiting, stop reading now. You've been warned.***

I had the absolute worst blood draw experience of my life this morning. I still feel sick and trembly.

To start things off, I sat in an empty lab room for about 45 minutes, waiting for someone to show up and draw my blood. I could hear two women chatting in the next room, but no one ever came in to check on me. Finally, a lady showed up to get things started.

Since I had had the blood drawn from my left arm Monday, I told her to do it from my right this time. She wrapped the tourniquet, patted my vein, and told me that she was going to have to switch to a smaller needle. (I have tiny, wimpy veins.) I'm starting to lose sensation in my fingers from the tourniquet at this point. She goes to insert the needle...and nothing. So she fidgets with this needle and chases that vein for, I kid you not, a good minute and a half. Finally I suggested that we switch to the left arm. She finally removes the tourniquet from my right arm, (ahh, circulation) and switches to the left. Ties off the veins, pats the crook of my arm, and inserts the needle...and nothing. Again. So she repositions again. And again. Finally, she catches the vein a little and a slow leak gets started. (Good enough for me.) All of a sudden, I start feeling incredibly hot and trembly and very, very nauseous. I warned her that I was feeling awful, and she hurried and finished drawing the vial. I asked her if she had anything I could throw up in, and she drug the trashcan over. I spent a good five minutes hunched over that can, waiting to throw up, and never did. She grabbed me a Pepsi and gave me a wet cloth to hold on my face, and they wouldn't let me leave for a while until I assured them I was feeling better. After a while I felt ok enough to drive home.

I think I'm going to go take a nap. I've been traumatized enough for one day. Hopefully I'll get my beta results back soon and make the drama worth it. Anyone else have traumatizing experiences with beta draws or blood donating?

  • I get very queasy from all that stuff but neglected your warning.

  • Awh BV that sucks!! When I got my b/w done, nothing came out when they first stuck me. She asked if I was hydrated. I drink a ton of water, so I replyed yes. She took it out and restuck a different vein and no problems. Whew.

I hope you feel better and FX for good betas!

  • The wait is super annoying! I'm sure you'll have bruising and I hope it's worth it! Hopefully it can't be bad after going through that.
  • How horrifying! I'd be PISSED at the lab. The things you go through for good betas. FX that's the worst experience of your 9 months. Now go take that nap. Rest my child. You deserve it!

  • That's brutal! Hope those numbers do their doubling thing and you feel better :)
  • Hope you get good results!

My second beta was awful.  The nurse put the needle in, then turned it sideways to go around the bruise from the first draw two days prior.  My arm was SO sore and numb all day.  I'm not kidding when I tell you that I couldn't raise my arm until the next day, and couldn't reach to put my hair in a pony tail!

  • My first beta was great - got right in there and sucked it out, but not the second one! She definitely had to dig around for a minute.  It didn't hurt, but the thought of it still makes me queasy.  OH and she had me pull the glove off of her hand while the needle was in my arm, so that she could get a better feel on my arm Ick!. I had to sit there a few minutes until I didn't feel like I was going to faint!  Not looking forward to future blood draws after that....

  • I have horrible wimpy veins too. My draw yesterday was no fun and I ended having to drive across town to the lab because she gets it first time every try. The docs office has yet to get it after 4 attempted draws now. I hope you get some great results!!

  • Yikes!! Sorry BV. I hope you get good betas too :)

I passed out after donating once and I've been blacklisted since.

  • I am no stranger to having nausea, vomiting, hot flashes, cold sweats, and all that jazz when getting blood drawn for labs or for donating.  Honestly, I stopped donating to the blood banks because it was just too much for me.  I'm sorry that you had to go through all of that!  It's a miserable experience.

  • My veins are terribly small too but I usually don't have a problem with blood draws.  This week was different - I could feel the stinging the whole time the needle was in and was sore for hours after.  DH thought I was such a wimp!

I hope you get great results after that torture!
