Back aches & Heartburn (Vent)

Within the last week or so I've started getting tremendous heartburn and aggrevating back aches. When do these hit? You guessed it... bed time. I'm getting so frustrated about the sleep I'm losing. Are any of you currently dealing with this on a regular basis now? Do you have any suggestions for the heartburn? It seems that nothing helps. I've tried tums, pepcid, milk and I'm even sleeping elevated. The heartburn STILL persists. I don't know if I can put up with this for 13 more weeks (give or take). Oh well, guess I'm just getting prepared for the LO's arrival!

  • Ask your OB for something prescription strength.  I tried Zantac, Tums, Prontix...all sorts of things, and OB just finally put me on prescription Nexium.  Did the trick for me.  I've had back heartburn since before I was pregnant though, it just got way worse during.

     Good luck!

  • Do you eat spicy foods or eat dinner late?  My dr told me to avoid both of those along with caffeine and it should help the heartburn.
  • me too! i think its acid reflux bc i have to sit up and burp every few minutes when i go to bed.
  • I CRAVE spicy foods but I'm doing my best to stay away from them. I'm also craving Diet Coke but I usually only have one a day and its usually with my lunch not dinner. I guess I will have to break down and get a prescription from the doctor. I just hate to do that.

  • I feel like I am getting the 3rd trimester curse! The heartburn the last 5 days has been so bad that it has caused me to vomit almost every morning/or in the middle of the night. I am taking Zantac religiously and meeting with the doc to discuss a possible prescription. I am slowly being reminded of the horror of my 1st trimester where I was miserable. Hoping you start to feel better. I feel your pain!
  • small meals help me.  I cannot overeat or I will get sick.  Watch acidic foods and give prevacid a shot.  It is a proton pump inhibitor, so a big different then other OTC meds.  Maalox straight from the fridge is very soothing too.

As for backache, try sleeping with a pillow between your knees to relieve pressure in your lower back.  If you are having upper back pain on the right side only, get checked out for gallstones, though.

As for not sleeping, I just try to get by.  I've been resting on the weekends like I did in 1st tri again.

  • I do use the pillow between my knees. I am in physical therapy twice a week as well because I have a herniated disc from an injury 6 years ago. No gall stones though because I have no gall bladder... that was a whole different ball game in itself.

Ah, that is a different story altogether.  I was also in PT with my first PG b/c I herniated a disk as a teen.  PG can really mess up and already messed up back!  Wish I could give you a magic pill that makes it better, but PT is probably the best thing for now (besides giving birth).  Don't over-exert yourself and take frequent breaks off of your feet.  If you sit at a desk all day, try a lumbar pillow and elevating your feet on a stool under your desk.

  • Heartburn- Zantac is pretty good.  Don't eat or drink within 2 hours of bedtime.  I also recommend either yogurt, or a small serving of vanilla ice cream as your last "snack" pre-bedtime.  Even with all that, heartburn is a *** sometimes!!!

  • I am having some relief from a zantac 75 twice a day, plus gaviscon with meals. Still not fully gone though, I still have the burps. Ick.

I've found that yogurt makes me feel the worst I think. I still eat it though. Just like coffee. I 'm sure it doesn't help but I'd be MORE miserable without my caffeine fix,ha.

sorry to hear about your disk problem/PT - that sucks. One thing about pregnancy it sure does make pre-existing conditions seem much worse! I had a foot issue pre pregnancy and it really flared up once I started packing on the pounds. Blah.
