How much $ is too much for party favors?

I'm starting to plan Kyva's birthday party and came across a theme that I love. I have a great idea for the favors and found an amazing deal, but it would still end up costing around $10/favor. We're planning to keep the guest list small this year with just close friends so she can really enjoy herself and not be overwhelmed, but it's still around 14 kids. Is this nuts? We're having it at our house and almost everything else will be DIY so other than the food/drinks/cake there wouldn't be much expense.

  • That's pretty nuts, imo, but not outside the realm of what I've seen at parties.  I usually DIY a good portion of our favors, but if I were to buy it, it'd be at least that.  Speaking of which, I need to get on that.  I've got less than a week! :)

  • That would be too much for me even if everything else were cheap.  Fourteen favors at $10/each plus food for at least 20, cake, drinks, etc. but if it works for you and your budget, go for it.
  • If it works for your budget then go for it!

Well it doesn't, really, but it always seems like I end up spending close to that anyway on a goodie bag of miscellaneous things. This is a book and it's currently only available in hardcover. Ugh...what to do...

Another idea is to get just a few of them and give them out as special prizes, but I wouldn't want any of the kids to feel left out. Especially when they're this little.

  • I was going say that if you were ok spending that much and it was gift that would be a major hit and used a ton then go for it, since you say it's a book that makes me lean more towards yes. Have you checked Amazon to see if it's part of their buy 3 get 1 free book stuff they always seem to have?
  • if its an idea you really love, and its something you can afford, then yes!

This was what swayed me too. It's an adorable one that would basically BE the theme for the party. Amazon is where I found the deal, but where would I see about the buy 3 get 1 free thing? Would it just show up when I click on the book title?

Yes, it says "special offer" under the box with the pricing and below it says buy "4 for 3" or something similar.
  • I don't think it is....I probably ended up spending more on than that on goodie bags and I felt like it was all junk that would get thrown away after a bit. A book would be a great idea...especially if it draws your theme together!

  • I think $10 on a favor is a lot, but then again I don't really like favors because they always seem like a waste. I've done them every year but I am starting to back away from them. A book sounds like it would be purposeful, but $140 seems like a lot to spend on favors.
  • The fact that it is a book, certainly makes me lean yeas, but only if it won't break the bank.

Maybe the quantity is too small, but have you thought about contacting the publisher for a discount just in case?  I got my wedding favors half off.  But I also might have gotten lucky.  =)

    What were your wedding favors??

P.S. Your baby is looking a little prune-ish these days.  :)

Zoe, I vote YES!  But I think giving a book as a favor is awesome and I'd probably splurge on it and try to skimp somewhere else.

  • Hmmm.. one year I spent $4 (stacking wooden construction vehicles) and I thought that was a lot. Now I've started doing books. For DS1's 4th bday, I gave a Little Mr/Little Miss books, a lolipop, and stickers. Cost worked out to $1.60/favor and they were a huge hit. Party theme was trains so I put a train stamp and sticker on each. They were a big hit.

For DS2's 2nd birthday I'm going to do books as well - you can get great deals on scholastic books - 10 paperbacks for $15 on some of their value packs.

Anyway, I guess my point is that I think giving books as favors or gifts is awesome, but I probably wouldn't spend $10 each, just buy a less expensive book and make the wrapping match the theme. I go budget on the wrapping too - brown paper sealed with a theme related sticker.

We're big gamers, you know.  So I picked out a card game and figured maybe they'd help me since I was ordering 60.  =)

  • Could you buy one book and make color photo copies? Laminate them into placemats, bookmarks, puzzles or just a fun picture to take away with smaller, less expensive goods. Or find printable color pages as an alternative (hopefully with the same story line).
