Re: recommendations for wraps or carriers?

  • Stretchy wraps are great for newborns (Moby, Sleepy Wrap, Baby K'Tan) as are ring slings (maya wrap or go to sleepingbabyproductions.net).

If you want something more versatile as they get older, you can look into structured carriers like an Ergo or Boba.

If you're really ambitious, you can look in to woven wraps.  You can do pretty much any carry at any age with a woven, but they have a high learning curve depending on how you want to carry your baby.  :)

  • We never had a moby.  DH wanted to wear DD from the beginning (he was wearing her on day 3!).  We got the Ergo Sport w/ Infant Insert.  We loved that thing so much.  We used the insert until DD was about 4 or 5 months old.  We still can use the Ergo itself and DD is about 27lbs.

  • With DD1 we had a peanut sling (waste) and a Bjorn.  She liked the peanut sling but it was uncomfortable for me and she hated the Bjorn, and the bjorn is hard to get on!

We got an Ergo when she was older and used the heck out of it!  We carried her through airports and used it when we took her to Australia.

With DD2, we got a K'tan and love it.  We'll use the Ergo when she gets bigger but the K'tan is great for when they are little.

  • I had several different kinds, so here's my assessment. I liked the Moby for the newborn stage, although the yards of fabric are a little hard to get on when you're out and about. But I did like the stretchiness and DD was very comfortable and fell asleep easily. I had the Bjorn and didn't like it that much. I had a hard time adjusting it so DD and I were both comfortable. I ended up getting a used Ergo and I love it. I thought she wouldn't like facing me when I wear it in the front but she doesn't seem to mind at all. I haven't tried to wear her on my back yet. I would recommend the Moby and the Ergo. I got both of them used - one at a consignment store and the other from a friend.

  • I tried SO many w/DD they pretty much ALL sucked (for me) except the ergo.  And when DD was super-tiny some cheap cotton sling worked well.
  • I used the Moby when he was tiny and moved up to the Beco Butterfly II when he was about 5 months. I loved the Beco and even wore him when he was almost 3 (mommy confession).

  • I'm not sure how I would have gotten through the first 5 months of DD's life without the Moby.  It was my only "trick" for getting her to calm down and take naps.  I took her everywhere in it.  I will agree that the verrrrrry long fabric was a little annoying to wrap in an out-and-about dire situation (screaming at a restaurant), but I got used to it.  Now that she is older, DD is still a "worn" baby a lot.  I got the Beco Baby Carrier (basically the same thing as the Ergo).  I LOVE it.  I pop her on every morning and walk her to daycare, and we both love going on walks in there.  I also bought a fleece vest that goes over both of us so I can still wear her in the Chicago winters.  Hindsight, I would have spent a bot more to get the full fleece jacket vs. the vest.  At the time, it just seemed too $$.  The Beco also has an infant insert, but I haven't used it since DD was older when I got this one.

  • I used the Bjorn for my 1st DS and for the first few months with DS2. I now have the Action Baby Carrier and freaken love this thing! Tried the Ergo...it wasn't for me.
