I'm going to appologize in advance for the format. Bumping from iPad. This will probably end up bing long.
Z was a great sleeper from 6 wks to 3 mos. So much so that there were times I worried she slept too much. At 3 mos. she was diagnosed with reflux and went on meds for that. At4 mos. she began waking regularly at night multiple times. Sometimes every hour. When DH left to work in another state we began bed sharing regularly, and she slept much better. Fast forward to almost 9 mos. and she is again waking at night crying for no apparent reason. We are on reflux meds and have switched to soy formula.
Here is the debate...we won't do CIO. I did try in desperation when I was alone for monts and needed sleep. All this did was cause her to cry so hard she threw up everywhere. I never wanted to do it anyways, I was just desperate. My DH seems to subscribe to the " some babies are just like that" camp, I personally think that if she sttn in the beginning then if he can't now there must be a reason. I don't want to " fix her sleep problems" I just want to help her if I can.should I sleep train? I have baby whisperer and no cry as well as Ferber. Is it nessecary? I just have a hard time believing we should have to " teach" our babies such a basic function as sleep. TIA for any input. All is appreciated!
Re: The great debate
My LO went through stage where she slept well and then didn't sleep well. A lot of it at that age was milestones and teething. Whenever she learned how to do something big she slept like crap.
I feel like she is just finally beginning to understand "sleep" and will want to go to sleep when she is tired (she fought going to sleep since day one) and she is 18 months. When she wakes up in the middle of the night i can sometimes get her to go to sleep without nursing, but other times i have to nurse her back down. And when she is teething it all goes out the window and she is up every 1.5 hours.
I do believe every baby is different, and you just have to do your best to figure out what they need at the time. I also believe every baby will learn how to sleep when they are ready. For some that is much sooner than others. And then once you figure it out, it all changes!
Good luck, sorry I'm not much help.
Have you read the Ferber book? There's a lot of great info about sleep patterns and sleep associations that could help, and wouldn't mean doing any CIO. It helped us a lot.
I agree with Solidio though, we had lots of sleep disturbances due to teething and developmental milestones. Every time she started working on something new, or had just gained a new skill she would wake herself up practicing!
Currently going through our second deployment. Can't wait for Zoe to meet her daddy!
I think that sounds very normal. Teeth, new skills, etc can all change sleep patterns. Just a stage. Just do whatever you need to do in order to survive. I'm with your DH on this one. Lots of luck.
DS was sleeping through the night from 6 weeks to 3 months exactly. He was also diagnosed with reflux but weaned off medication at 7 months.
We bed-share and were bf-ing all night long. He was waking up every 1-4 hours, screaming if I didn't nurse, and I read books about just about every sleep "method" wrote! We tried CIO for once out of desperation, and he ended up hysterical and throwing up so that was the one and only time. The No-Cry Sleep Solution and Baby Whisperer had good tips and ideas but nothing worked for him and I wasn't willing to let him cry anymore.
We just pretty much gave up and let him wake/nurse whenever he wanted and you know what? He started sleeping through the night last week. There is hope!
This, this, this. You really can't compare the sleep patterns of a regular baby to one who has reflux. It sounds like your LO's reflux is not under control, which is leading to the frequent nightwakings. Are you seeing a Pediatric GI? Ditto to Babycenter's reflux board...they really know their stuff.
Also, if your LO's reflux is causing the nightwakings, crying will only make it worse. That's why your LO pukes when he cries. DD is my reflux baby, and she still doesnt STTN, so I know it can be difficult.
