Getting and Keeping attention

How do you get/keep LO's attention? He used to be soo good with books and certain toys now he wont sit still for two seconds. I still read as he's getting into whatever it is that's near us but he doesn't have much interest. He doesnt have many words, (he'll be 16 mo's at end of the month) Im not worried at all but i do want to keep up with the reading so Im just wondering if there are any tricks out there that you ladies use to keep LO in place for more than 2 seconds!

Re: Getting and Keeping attention

  • What does he play with?  Is he more into building things?  If so you can get blocks that have letters, pictures, and numbers on it and talk about those things while you're building.  Instead of pushing activities, use the ones he's already interested in.

  • I rarely am able to keep his attention which is normal.  When I read to him I make sure most of his toys are out of sight so he won't get too distracted.  I also read to him to put him down for a nap, since he's tired he doesn't run away.
  • Our LO has a short attention span, too. I think that's normal - just too much to look at and do. I find he has more interest in lift-the-flap books so he tends to sit and read with me more if we're looking at one of those.

But I agree with PP - use his other toys to teach him words, etc. If you're playing with blocks, tell him what colors they are or what animals or letters are on them.

  • i forgot to mention toys dont keep his attention much either....He'd rather have the kitchen utensils, toilet paper, magazines everything he's not supossed to have yet LOL! I know they have short attention spans at this age Im not worried about him at all just wondering if there were any tricks out there to get him more interested.....

He's interested when other kids are around, guess he needs a buddy/girlfriend hahah

  • Maybe start going to the library for new books every once in awhile? He might be bored with the ones at home. Also, reading before naps or bed is a good way to calm my kids down.
