First dentist appt?

So has anyone taken their LO to the dentist yet?  I just schedule DD for her first dentist appt since she now has 4 teeth.  It is next Friday at a recommended pediatric dentist.  Both DH & I had dreadful teeth habits during our youth and are really intent on making sure that DD has positive teeth experiences and consistent care as she grows.

Re: First dentist appt?

  • We haven't taken Chase to the dentist yet, but we were just talking yesterday about finding a good pediatric dentist.  I think I'm going to wait until DS is a year old before making an appointment though.

  • Not yet, no. She has a mouthful of teeth (8), but I had it in my head that it was something "to do" when she turned a year old.

  • Nope. Our ped doesn't "require" us to see a dentist before 2 years (by that, I mean that even though he acknowledges it's the thing to do these days, it isn't a necessity). Even the pediatric dentist we now see says it's really unnecessary earlier than that. So, Beaker won't start until closer to 2 unless there's an issue we think needs addressing.

  • I don't actually know what our ped recommends (can ask tomorrow at DD's 9 month appt), but all the things I found online said that the recommendation is that there should be a quick check-up once teeth come in and no later than the first birthday.  I figure DD has 4 teeth so we might as well go (and it is covered by my insurance for her.)

I'll let folks know what the dentist actually does!

  • When i asked the dentist i was told 2-3 years, because i assumed it would be yearly once they started getting teeth. They also said unless theres a problem not to worry because they can barely get in a child that youngs mouth and they would have to put them out if anything did arise.

  • We just took ds#1. My dentist recommended between 2-3 years old.
  • my dentist said before age 3.

  • DD1 is seeing the dentist today for her 1st appt at 2 y 9m. She still does not have her 2 yo molars. The dentist told me they don't need to see the children until the 2yo molars come in.  DD2 will not see the dentist for several more yrs.

  • I asked my dentist when I had my exam last week. He said if something is *wrong* to bring him in, but he said as long as we're using a baby toothbrush once a day,  there's no need for him to go to a dentist until age 3. Of course, the nearest pediatric dentist is in the city 90 miles away, so it might be different if that weren't the case.
