Difficulty TTC After C-Section

Just wondering if anyone has had trouble trying to conceive after a c-section that was tied either directly or indirectly back to your c-section (or subsequent infection, etc.)? We are TTC #2 without much luck for 7 months now and after having become pregnant on our first "try" with #1, I am starting to wonder...

Thanks!

Re: Difficulty TTC After C-Section

  • I really have no idea if 2 c/s's affecting TTC #3 or not.  I tend to think my IUD might have done more harm, but I'll never know.  I didn't have an hsg and I think that's the only thing that would have shown something.  I think the biggest factor working against me was my age.

This is correct.  There is an increased risk of fertility after a c/s (that goes up the more you have).  I don't recall the actual numbers- it is not a large percentage, but it is possible and worth talking to your doctor about.

  • In my experience absolutely not!  I have PCOS and TTC for 3+ years to get DS, which finally happened with fertility meds.  I'm currently pregnant because I forgot my birth control one month and DH and I DTD only on one day that month, we weren't TTC, it just happened for us.

If you are concerned you could ask your doctor.

  • I doubt there's a connection. Are you charting to know when you're ovulating? You might be missing your ovulation. First time it took us 6 months and the second time it was the first try

  • yes....

I was infertile for over 2 years of TTC #2.  I had done 5 medicated cycles with IUI's with no luck.  I finally had a laparoscopy on October and my bladder was attached to my uterus and my uterus also attached to my abdomen.  My right tube was twisted and completely folded over with scar tissue.  My Dr. freed up all the adhesions and I got pregnant naturally 2 cycles later.

I did have a post-op infection with ds.  My fertility Dr. said he had only seen complications from a c-section like this 3 times in his career.

  • I have been charting but my cycles have been quite variable in length - up to 42 days at one point and now 30-32 so hoping things happen soon. But I do appreciate all of the information, because if things progress past a year I will definitely know to ask lots of questions about the c-section, scar tissue, etc. Thanks so much!

  • My sister and BIL have experienced secondary IF after their first child and c-section.  They TTC on their own for over a year before getting medical intervention.  They are now doing IVF and will hopefully be pg with baby # 2 soon!  Her Dr.'s couldn't give her a definite reason for the IF either.  She had an infection during labor which they said could possibly be part of it, but her tubes are clear.  I would give it a little more time and just continue charting with well timed intercourse.  Sometimes it's just luck!
  • I had the reverse. It took multiples cycles to get pg with my first and conceived the first time we used the withdrawal method as BC with #2.

Secondary IF does happen to couples regardless of how they delivered their first child. Not that you're necessarily experiencing that as it can take a healthy couple up to a year to conceive.

It's not a terrible idea to call your OBs office and see what they say. If you're under 35, they might wait a few more months to intervene, but its probably worth a call to see what their opinion is.

  • I definitely think there can be a connection and I worry about it as hard as we tried for #1.  I'm trying to come to grips that there might not be a #2 now.  Your uterus was cut open so there's scar tissue where an embryo might possibly try to implant.  Not to mention the scarring on the outside of the uterus as someone else mentioned could attach to other organs.  I had that problem corrected with my endometriosis.  But there's also secondary and unexplained infertilty.  If you haven't had any other fertility complications and aren't over 35 I would simply keep trying for the next 5 months until you reach the year mark.  Sometimes you just have to wait to get lucky.  If nothing then I would see the doctor.

  • I have had three c-sections and am pregnant with my fourth. ?There are many other reasons you may be experiencing problems such as age, or perhaps even something going on inside like endometriosis. ?I cannot tell you how many of my friends had some kind of "female" problem keep them from getting pregnant right away (even a couple of years after the birth of the first child). ?They say if you are under 35 to wait a year, six months for 35 and older...but go get checked to be sure you don't have any obstructions that you are unaware of. ?Also, get a period app, ovulation kit, etc...if you haven't already. At least then, you will have something to show your doctor, and you will know that you are doing everything you can. ?Good luck, and hang in there!!!!?
