Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Why are people breaking paci habits?

Just wondering... I understand doing it if you're having to replace it every few minutes but other than that, why? Hadley enjoys hers so much (mostly for napping/bedtime but sometimes just b/c) and I just don't even have the concern on my radar, so truly just curious.

Re: Why are people breaking paci habits?

  • First I just want to point out that Hadley is cuter every single time I see her!

As far as breaking the habit, our son just did it on his own. He stopped liking it at about 3.5months. We actually were trying to have him keep it up as a way to self soothe, but he found another way.

I totally just jacked this post just to talk about how cute Hadley is though.

  • I think its one of those things moms feel like "if they dont nip in the bud now" will become a problem - I dont have any desire to take DD's binkie away yet. Shes starting to use it less on her own anyway and I'll worry about it when her teeth start to come in - until then she can have it whenever she wants.  PS Hadley is beyond cute! I love her "summer rompers!"

  • Mine doesn't like hers all that much anymore (as a NB we couldn't take it away from her...lol).

I figure it's one less thing hanging off her and one less thing I have to find.

We're going gradual though. She doesn't care all day or for most naps but loves it at night yet. She gets it back at nap if she won't settle any other way. She also gets it once in awhile in the carseat as well if she's stressed. At this point for sleep, if she screams she can have it. I just thought slow and steady wins the race, so might as well start now.

  • I took it away at 4 or 5 months because she was waking up every hour at night for us to replace it. If it wasn't causing any problems I would have let her keep it though!

This is the only reason I would consider it right now. He wakes up a million times in the early morning looking for it. However I'm trying to discourage thumb sucking, if he doesn't have the paci he's thumb sucking, you can't take their thumbs away.

Paci use until 2 is normal, on average kids thumb suck until 5-6 years old.

  • OMG...I love Hadley's new picutures...she's such a cutie!  Our LO is as addicted to his paci for naps/bedtime as I am the coffee first thing in the morning.

Our pedi said if he has a strong desire to suck, if we take it away, he'll just become a thumbsucker, and I think that's a much harder habit to break later on.  I am not concerned at all about a 6 month old using a paci.

  • We only give it to DS to sleep or in the car.  DD dropped it on her own at 7 months and I'm hoping DS does the same.  If not, we will start slowly weaning from it around 8/9 months. I just feel its easier to break the habit early versus trying to take it away from a 1 year old, which is the age where we will get rid of the paci no matter what.

  • It will be easier to break it now than a year from now.

eh, we just starting throwing a few paci's in the crib at night and it solved the problem.

Abby mainly uses her for naps, bedtime and uncontrollable crying episodes.  We are not going to worry about her usage until she is over 12 mos.

  • Lurking:  I don't want to break LO from it but at the same time I pretty much never get any sleep because of replacing the paci so much. My biggest issue is the swaddle because it's a aids risk now that she's learning to roll. Now only if she could ind her paci! Lol. I'm actually ordering a. Wunbanub today to see if thy helps her learn how I find it.
  • Glad you posted this question.

DD loved her paci as a nb too, and now rarely uses it, but I'll give it to her when napping or going down for the night. For months now, she's been able to put it in her mouth if she drops it so I don't have to go put it in - at night though she only needs it for the first part of being awake, because when I go check on her she's sleeping without it.

  • I'm thinking about it for two reasons- I'm wondering if the paci is contributing to sleep issues instead of helping them. Every time DS wakes at night, his paci is out. Sometimes I can replace it and he is back to sleep in seconds. But in the long run I don't want to stumble blearily down the hall every hour at night. Also, I think it would be easier to ditch now before he's old enough to ask for it and throw a fit when it isn't offered. But, I'm too chicken to try right now....

  • Maybe the board has lots of Baby 411 readers? they recommend ditching the paci at 6 mos.

  • DD is loosing her's except at bedtime Sunday (she will be 8 months).

She has teeth coming in, and as PP said, it's easier now than later.

  • I was playing the "Put the Paci Back" game overnight.  That's when we broke it.  He was about 5 and half months.  Stopped giving it to him on that Friday and haven't had it since.  The initial lay down to go to sleep was rough, but ever since then.. no issues.  So glad we did it then before he was old enough to "miss" it for weeks.

  • We're leaving the paci issue alone until at least 12 mons. I don't mind him having a paci, but don't want another thumb sucker. He's happy, we're happy...so we're leaving it be.

  • Hadley is seriously one of the prettiest little girls on here.
  • I would much rather have a paci-user than a thumb sucker! Like someone else said - it's a much easier habit to break. DS uses his as a teether right now (chews on the side of it), so I'm definitely not taking it away!

If he hasn't broken himself of it, we have talked about starting to wean him around 11 months - keep for nap/night time and then in the car seat. We may start a little earlier, depending on when he starts talking more. It will be completely gone by 18 months though.
