Breast pump on registry?

Hi Girls, Is it tacky for me to register for a breast pump? Is that something too personal and I should buy on my own? Just checking the ettiquette. Thanks.

Re: Breast pump on registry?

  • You should register it.  I did and got it as a present from my sister-in-law.

  • I totally registered for one. The way I look at it is lot of women who breast feed use them and it is natural for women to breastfeed.
  • It's another item you will need so I don't see anything wrong with it. I'm putting absolutely everything I can think of that I may need on my registry. Not necessarily hoping that guests with buy it but for my own use after the shower as a guide when I shop for more.
  • YES! I agree with PP about the fact that you may actually get it, PLUS most stores with registries will give you a completion discount of 10-15%, which could make a big difference on something that expensive!

  • I already bought mine, but I am putting on storage bags and breast pads. If someone doesn't want to buy them, I will use the discount and buy them myself.

  • Most people seem to register for it. I don't think it's tacky at all to do so. :)

  • YES! Register for it! Breastfeeding is natural...why would any woman who is coming to your shower think that is weird?

Even if no one buys it......you will still get the discount at the end !!

  • I registered for two! LOL a manual and an electric. I plan on returning to work full time after my leave but I wanted a manual incase something happens to the electric and one thats easy to bring to work.
  • I agree - it's not inappropriate at all. Just another item you'll need for when baby gets here! It deserves to be on the registry.

  • I don't think it's tacky nor inappropriate but is a matter of opinion & what you feel comfortable with. If you get gift cards/money you can put toward your bp should you choose not to list it.

Even though I have a registry, I'm using it as a buy guide as well. What I don't get I plan to purchase on amazon or overstock - which is at least 20% cheaper than the big name stores... also directed family members to as well. Since we're all on a tight budget ;)

  • I plan to buy mine with my Flex Spending Account (FSA) so I planned accordingly when I allocated money to it for 2012.

Since I have that option available, it didn't seem right to make someone pay full-price for it when I could use pre-tax dollars. If you have an HSA you can also use that money. Or if you spend enough on healthcare to deduct those expenses from your taxes, you can also deduct breastfeeding supplies.

  • Most registries I have seen, have a breast pump on there.  I plan to register for mine.

  • It is not tacky. Women who don't nurse register for cans of formula, so you should be able to register for your "cans" too!

  • I have a breast pump on my registry. If its needed then there is nothing wrong with adding it.

A lot of mom's breastfeed its natural, so I doubt anyone would find it odd if you put it on your registry.

  • fyi- many insurances will cover the cost of a breast pump with a prescription from your doctor. my parents were going to buy us a new one, but now that we have the option to get it through our insurance we'd rather have them save their money and get the baby something else.

of course not all policies will cover this, but certainly something to look into.

  • I don't think there is anything wrong with registering for your breast pump or supplies.  However, I decided I would not register for these items until after my work shower.  Even though it is something fairly expensive my work could get me, it isn't something I want to open in front of my co-workers.

  • I put mine on the registry with our DS because with certain places (ex- Babies R Us), you get a discount on anything left on your registry at the end.. so if noone gets it for you then you will get a percentage off at the end, a few weeks before your due date. My mom ended up getting mine for me but she waited until I got the discount at the end, those pumps are expensive and any percentage off helps! Wink

  • If you don't mind opening it in front of people, then go for it!

On a somewhat related note, I have a funny story from my shower for my 1st DD.  My husband was helping with the gift opening, and I'll never forget the shade of red one of my 16 year old cousin's turned as my DH opened her gift and held it proudly aloft declaring "It's a nipple brush!"  The whole room erupted into such laughter I will never forget!

  • I had it on my registry for DD- didn't get it from anyone, so we ended up buying it when DD was 6 weeks old.
