What to do for a stuffy nose? NBR

Sorry if this is a repeat question.

I am miserable.  My nose is so stuffy that I cannot breathe out of it one bit.  It's driving me crazy, I can't sleep and I feel like crap.  I also have sneezing and watery eyes so I think it's allergies.  I've never had an issue with them before but I don't think I'm sick because I don't have any dark mucus or fever or anything.

The main frustration is my stuffy nose.  I've tried saline drops and I can't/ won't do Afrin because I know I'll just keep having to do it.  I've also tried Benedryl and menthol rub.  I don't have a neti pot.

Is there anything else I can do?  TIA

  • take a hot steamy shower or use a humidifier

  •  i know you said you won't do afrin, but if you're just sick, i'd maybe reconsider. afrin is the only way i survie when i'm stuffy. nothing else works for me.

i'm not sure what else is pregnancy safe, but maybe you need something that reducing the swelling in the nasal passages (that's my issue when i'm stuff, and i think that's why afrin works so well for me). i think mucinex makes something with that in it, as does advil, but i'm pretty sure you can't take advil.

sorry, hope you feel better soon!

Ditto this.  I would try it just for tonight and hopefully it helps and you can get some temporary relief.  Other than that, a hot steamy shower.  I think vicks makes something you can actually put in your shower and it makes menthol vapors.  That might help?

  • Thanks for the suggestions.  I'll check into that Vick's shower stuff.  I'm sure I'll end up taking the nasal spray to sleep tonight.  In the past, I've had problems with "addiction" to it.  (I guess that's what you'd call it.  I literally could not breathe out of my nose without using it.)  I don't want to do that again but I have to have some relief.  I'll try the shower and humidifier, too.

  • Have you ever tried the saline nasal gel?  The brand is Ayr or something like that.  It probably wouldn't fix the worst of stuffy noses, but when mine's moderately bothering me it actually helps quite a bit.  Just swab a bit on the inside of your nose with a q-tip and you're good.

But when it gets really bad I'll use Afrin (much as I hate to) for a day or two just to give me a break.

  • this may sound weird but i will sleep with a breathright strip on my nose if I am having nasal issues.  Always works

Oh yeah Ayr is good too. I forgot about that

  • i have chronic nose issues of course worse with pg. i used afrin on occasion, mucinex and eat those altoids--they are spicy and help you breathe for a little while
