Austin Babies

it's been posted before, but those who cancelled cable...

how ya doing?  Is it going well?  What have you done to supplement your favorite cable shows?  Money's getting tight around here so we're considering cancelling our cable (:sob::) and getting one of those Roku boxes.

Tell me more and say it like you're talking to a 3-year-old.  Maybe even the 5-year-old level.  :)

  • I do good except during football. Missing football makes me ?ber cranky. Otherwise, I don't miss it at all. We bought a fancy antenna for $40 and the one Ty built out of 6 paper clips and a cd case works way better and gives a super clear pic.

  • Has your location always said, "Texas, baby!" That just cracked me up.

We have had cable for a total of 11 months over the last 6 years. I watch the current shows on Hulu (regular Hulu via my laptop, but you can get Hulu Plus to play it directly from your Roku box). The episodes for most shows are on Hulu shortly after they are on live TV.

I watch older (previous season and beyond) stuff on Netflix Streaming.

And just in general, I watch a lot less TV. However, I'm really wishing I knew what the hell was going on with the Kardashian drama. It's the show I can't get either from Hulu or Netflix. Stupid cable TV!

  • We haven't had it for awhile now. Over a year? Things are GREAT. I am loving all that extra money every month and I still watch probably too much tv. What we do instead:

    1) Obviously we have an antenna. Through the antenna we get Fox, ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS, and some spanish channels. So that takes care of a lot of sports, the news, and tv shows.

    2) Netflix. We stream all the kids shows off of netflix (through the xbox or ps3). I watch some stuff on there too.

    3) Hulu plus. We end up watching most of our shows off of Hulu plus (through the xbox or ps3) because we don't like being forced into the network schedule :)

    4) ESPN 3. If you have ATT dsl for internet you can get ESPN 3 through the xbox. That covers almost all of the rest of the sports that we watch. I won't lie, we still miss some, but not enough to make it worth paying $100+ per month to get them

  • We have a Roku box and a Netflix digital subscription.  I've been willing to pay for HuluPlus but haven't found it necessary.  Amazon Prime has a growing free video library but we haven't looked at it much.

DH desperately misses Formula 1 racing, the only shows I miss are Dexter and Breaking Bad.  Other than F1 we don't do sports.  It was a much easier transition than I expected!

  • We have cable now but went without for 5 years previously.  Honestly, now that I have Netflix streaming and Hulu, I could easily do without again.  Our one major problem (and the reason we got cable again) was because our antennae reception wasn't great, however, we didn't really look into trying another antennae either.  That might have solved our problem.  I think the #1 reason we have cable is probably because DH likes F1 and soccer so much.  It's really not hard to do without.

  • We've been sans cable for 2.5 years now.  I thought I would miss it, but I really don't.  We subscribe to netflix.  We get one disc and stream through our playstation.  We watch the basic networks and are totally fine with that.  Frankly, we don't have that much time to watch tv.

I think it was one of the best things that happened to us by accident.

  • We had been without cable for about 5 years and I didn't miss it at all. We streamed Netflix through Roku and there are a number of other channels you can add that also have movies & TV (Hulu Plus, Crackle, TED, Pandora, YouTube.)

Recently, we accidentally realized that we had free standard def cable. Our TV was plugged into the cable outlet and we have cable internet from Time Warner, and so I guess they just turned the standard def when turning on the internet. It's nice to have some of those cable shows, but honestly, we still watch the major networks more. If the cable TV all of a sudden went away, we wouldn't order it and I wouldn't miss it.
