I have the name Liv on my list but am worried that all the Olivias out there will up the number of Livs by virtue of people using nicknames. Of the Olivias you know of, do they use the nickname Liv as a nn?
I think Liv is a name that will forever be attached to the name Olivia. If you name your daughter Liv I think you will run into a lot of people assuming that it is short for Olivia. (Example: I associate the name Abby with Abigail even if it is a stand alone name). Liv is still a pretty name though
Liv is def a short for Olivia, but if you like it, use it. I personally love the name Jesse, but dislike Jessica. So if that is a name for our daughter, it will be Jesse on the birth certificate legally, not Jessica.
If you like it go for it - but it is definitely the nickname for Olivia (and there will be lots of those running around called Liv) so her entire life she will be asked if her name is Olivia (it's like being named Jen or Greg instead of Jennifer or Gregory).
I have an Alivia and DH and I call her Alivia. Our families call her Livi (which makes me cringe) and day care calls her Alivia, Livi or Liv. Surprisingly I don't mind Liv, even though we didn't intend on anyone calling her that.
If we name DD Olivia, we'll probably called her Livi when she's little but Olivia when she's older. I'm not a fan of Liv. If it's a nn she likes, I'll use it but I wouldn't naturally call her that.
I might feel this way because I'm a big Law & Order SVU fan and Marishka Hargitay's character is Olivia and they call her Liv on the show. It's a weird association for me bc of the show's subject matter.

It's what I would use, though I don't know how popular it is. I don't know too many Olivias though
I know one Olivia irl, spelled Olivea, and she never goes by Liv.
