Vitamin D drops?

I know I should just call and ask, but it's easier to ask you ladies.

The pedi gave DD a RX for vitamin D drops, but when she wrote it she mentioned something about needing the rx for the insurance...so, my question is, are vitamin D drops for baby OOC, or do I need to go to the pharmacy counter?

thanks!

Re: Vitamin D drops?

  • I think if you just buy them OTC then you can't really get coverage for them, can you?
Downside is getting a prescription filled usually costs more, because they charge a dispensing fee. (At least, they do here.)

  • The drops aren't OTC...you'll need to go to the counter.

  • You can get an over the counter multivitamin with enough vitamin D in it though. That's why my pedi had me do.

    Poly-Vi-Sol its called.

  • There is another one other than the poly-vi-sol, too.  I forget its name, so that's not much help to you.  But the answer is yes, it is available over the counter.

Did your doctor want you to give the drops (which are made by formula companies) because you EBF?  They may be the right thing for your family, which is fine, but you might want to read this/ask your pedi some questions before you give your baby anything: https://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/vitamins/vitamin-d.html

  • Tri-Vi-Sol is the one for breasfed infants.  That was the one our pedi suggested.

I also bought Poly-vi-sol on accident, but it sounds like it's for older children.

  • We buy them OOC for like $5 at the local pharmacy.  We just use the generic brand instead of Enfamil's Tri vi Sol.
