May 2011 Moms

FFFC clicky poll #1 changing table

Since no one will ever confess to any safety lapses, I thought we could do a couple polls about them. The other day when LO was on the changing table I really needed to grab some pants for her and decided to take her with me instead of leaving her, but I was wondering how many other moms actually do that. Whoever's on the FB group, call the ladies over if you want, so we can get a more complete May 11 group!

And just for the record (in case the first person 'fesses up to serious safety problems and everyone blames me), I'm not going to be voting until at least a couple of other people have, even though for most I have nothing to be ashamed of.

  • We change on the bed, so before she could roll I'd leave her there all the time.

  • when she was tiny and couldn't roll or anything I would clip her in and get something in the same room but now there is no way, She rolls even clipped and can crawl out and off if I am not there. There is no way I would now.

  • I have never left her alone on the changing table. I'm a paranoid momma lol. I saw a movie or tv show when I was about to have Hailey where the baby fell off the changing table, paranoid ever since!

Same here. Every single diaper change/clothes change is a wrestling match lately and there is no way I can even take my hands off her, never mind walk away. When she was very small and couldn't roll, I could take two steps away from it to grab an outfit from her closet.

  • I did leave her in the early days when she just laid there like a slug, but clipped in.  No way now.  She doesn't roll off (she only rolls toward the wall to play with her quilt on the wall) but she does scoot towards her head and tries to launch herself off the end head first.

  • We have a changing table and never use it. 99% of the time diaper changes happen on the floor. We even have a thin little mat for that purpose in the living room.

  • Mine is not the typical changing table (I have am Ikea one) so the changing pad is a little more secure, therefore he is a little more secure, and he is not mobile yet, he rolls everywhere but for some reason on the changing table he is perfectly still, so that has allowed me to get something quick even from the bathroom (the room right next to his) but he is figuring out just now how to grab things around him on the table so now I can't leave him alone!
  • We have a belt on ours that you can buckle and it straps DS down to the changing table. One time (only once!) I realized that there were no diapers in the basket so I buckled him in and ran to the next room to grab a diaper.
  • I left Lydia unattended ONCE on the changing table when she was itty bitty, as in 2 weeks old. DH didn't restock diapers, so I had to do a 1 second dash to the closet to get more. She was sleeping at the time.... From that point on, I have always checked to make sure everything is stocked before hand. I would never leave her alone on the changing table, especially now.

I was going to say does anyone really use the buckle thing?  I don't think I have ever used it!

  • When he was a newborn and not mobile I would occasionally turn around to get something in the same room when he was on there.  I would have an eye on him at all times.

Now that he has mobile... no way!  We had to move the change pad to the floor.  It's hard enough keeping him still to change him let alone trying to keep him from crawling off the table.

  • All of our extra diapers are in a drawer under the changing table. All of their clothes are folded in the dresser within arms reach of the changing table. Wipes are on top of the dressers, diapers in a diaper stacker within arms reach hanging on the wall. Usually, I'll pull an outfit and put it on the changing table. However, on the rare occasion when I pull something that doesn't fit anymore (sniff, sniff!) or I drop something, I'll clip baby in and reach with 1 hand on the baby for what I need. Even with the rolling, I still feel safe doing this since everything is stored so that even extras are very close by. No accidents thus far!

  • ...we have an ottoman as a changing table, it's pretty big but I don't leave her unattended. Sometimes I do have to grab something from her closet, but I will SERIOUSLY walk backwards so I can keep a watch on her.
