2nd Trimester

Is it possible to have Braxton Hicks this early?

I will be 17 weeks tomorrow and seem to be having tightening somewhat painful spasms I guess you could say in my lower abdomen not often but maybe a few times a week. Is anyone else experiencing this?

Re: Is it possible to have Braxton Hicks this early?

  • I have had them only once (around 18ish weeks..can't remember exactly), and it was because I was really dehydrated from a stomach bug.

Sometimes I will get an intense pressure in just a portion of my abdomen that is kind of uncomfortable (but not painful), and it is actually my baby's position. I'm not sure that is the feeling you are describing though.

  • I read that your body starts having them as early as 6 weeks but we can't feel them until much later.  I'm not sure if what I have felt were BH, but if so, I felt them at 16 weeks.  They are increasing now, so I'm gonna ask the doc about it this week.  I don't remember ever feeling it with my DD or DS.

  • Yes you can, at ny last appt. my doctor told me I might feel those and not to worry. If you're still concerned call your doc.
  • I'm not really sure how to explain the feeling, mostly it is in the morning right when I wake up though. I am trying to call my doctor but waiting to have my call returned so I thought I'd ask around here first.

  • I am having them regularly and I have noticed it is mostly after intercourse, exercise and eating large amounts. I thought it was odd that they started this early but this is my third so I am chalking it up to that.

That's how I feel too.  It's like a pressure feeling that's trying to pop out.  The first time I felt it, it was like something was trying to push out of my belly.  Even saying that doesn't seem like an accurate description.  I've been wanting to ask my doc, but I don't know how to describe it!  I notice it happens when I bend in a weird way, trying to put on a sock or a shoe or moving weird to help DD.  So I thought it was just maybe me moving weird.  It's happening more now, so I'm thinking it's probably BH.  It's over almost as soon as it starts for me.

  • I read in an article, our uterus contracts throughout our lives. We start to actually feel our uterus contracting during pregnancy because our uterus is growing along w/ the pressure from baby weight & amniotic fluid.

Nothing to be alarmed of but do be mindful throughout pregnancy & communicate w/ your dr. any concerns or questions.

  • I started feeling them a few weeks ago.  They aren't painful but I can feel the tightening.

  • I have been getting them as well.  Usually only after I walk long distances to my classes though, then when I am sitting in class I get them.

  • Drink more water! I got them when I was about 19 weeks along with some cramping and it turned out I wasn't drinking enough water. It might not completely stop them but it does ease them and make it feel better.
  • Mine started up at 16 weeks but this is my second pregnancy.  My first pregnancy they started up at about 25 weeks.
  • This time since it's my third baby I noticed them around 12 weeks. Most women have them much earlier than they feel them. Braxton Hicks should feel like an over all tightening of your stomach not just in one spot. If your just feeling it in one spot its probably the baby. If it's pain in your lower abdomen that's probably rlp. If you feel more than five bh in an hour drink some water and try to take a break from what ever your doing.

  • Dr told me today that they don't come until 34 weeks. She said it was probably stretching or rlp. I told her it felt very different than either of those so she did an internal and sent my urine to check for uti.
