Please recommend your favorite vacations for toddlers

My husband and I were discussing the fact that it's been a long time since we took a vacation.  We know we want to go to Disneyland, Hawaii, Lake Tahoe etc. However, we just moved here from NY in October so I know nothing about vacationing to any of these places.  It would be so helpful if you could give me some details about your favorite vacation spots with the kids.

  • I have yet to go with my toddler to hawaii or Disneyland but I highly recoment lake tahoe. We went over the summer and hiked and played and had a great time.

We have been short on cash so we have been doing a lot of day and weekend trips since we had dd. I highly recomend Monterey. Which happens to be my neighborhood. We never seem to run out of day trip ideas near by. Today we went to carmel and wandered around petting dogs and chaseing birds at the white sand beach. The Aquariam is awsome and so is the bike trail and 17 mile drive and well there is too much to see in one weekend or even one week.

We go see the elephant seals for a weekend in san simion every winter. I love that weekend trip. You can also catch them in ana nuevo near sf.

Yosemite is amazing and a must see national park in California.

What do u enjoy doing on vacation?

  • We've been to Maui with our boys twice and had a great time. The Kaanapali area is very kid friendly. In addition to lots of time at the pool/beach, there is the Sugar Cane Train (a favorite of my boys), glass bottom boat/submarine ride, aquarium.

Tahoe is great too - we went the summer my oldest was 1.5. We really just relaxed and spent time at the lake.

You didn't mention it, but San Diego is another fun vacation spot with kids - warm weather, beach, awesome zoo, Legoland and the flight is sooo much easier than Hawaii :-)

  • ditto tribride on all accounts!! We did Maui same area as tribride mentioned when my oldest was 9months. Really fun trip, but we kept dreaming about having one of our parents with us so we could enjoy ourselves a little more ;-) it is a long plane ride with a squirmy one.

areas in tahoe, look for a house right on the lake, vbro has a lot of great rentals. Kings beach is family friendly and a lot slower pace than south shore. But if you want to be in south shore (casions, shopping, restaurants) that would be fun too.

We recently did Disney. My youngest had a lot of trouble sitting in the stroller/napping on the go. He was a little miserable. At that age, I would do a trip where you are in one spot, go to the beach, play, back to the rental for naps.

  • We love taking DS to Monterey or other spots on the coast just to hang out.  WE recently did an overnight in Monterey and were totally busy and could have used more time just to explore.  We also really enjoyed a few nights in a hotel in Santa Cruz.  It was a work trip for me but DS, DH and my mom really enjoyed playing on the beach and swimming in the pool at the Dream Inn and walking the wharf. We fantacize about going back all the time!

I can also recommend Yosemite for a family vacation if you can get a spot in the park.  We got a last minute cabin in Curry Village last year and had a blast.  We parked the car and took the free shuttle all over the valley.  We did an easy hike, had dinner out, played in the snow, explored their museum.  We hope to do it again soon.
