NTR: any experience with Chantix?

Hi ladies, sorry I never seem to post on here anymore, life is so busy and exhausting right now with this pregnancy and keeping up with DS1... oye.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has any experience with using Chantix or knowing someone who has? DH finally went and got a prescription, but the Dr. really freaked him out about all the possible side effects, which is now freaking me out.... she talked about suicidal, even homicidal, urges... yikes!

My biggest concern is if DH can safely take care of DS once he starts this medicine....

If anyone has any thoughts, experiences, anything you can share with me, I'd love to hear it, thanks! (going to post and run, at work right now, will check back later).

  • I had some coworkers take it with out any issue.

I would think if your husband is prone to depression it isn't a good idea to go the chantix route.  If it was that dangerous it wouldn't have been approved by the FDA.

If you are that freaked out why not try something like the patch, gum, or vapor?

  • My drama queen mother tried it, and claimed within the first few days her heartbeat sped up uncomfortably so she stopped; my stepfather then stopped because he was 'scared' about side effects as well. I personally just think they wanted an excuse to not stop smoking based on their personalities. Those side effects are possible, but a defnite extreme. I think you could ask for a second opinion and discuss the option with your DH--consider if he has tried other cessation methods first--and consider when it may be the best time to try Chantix considering everything going on right now. Good luck!

The FDA and I have trust issues. But I agree with the advice - there are other methods if you are concerned about Chantix.

  • MIL tried it, vivid dreams and she was forgetful. ..She was in school for CPA license and she said she'd forget what she just read.  She stopped taking it...she used that as the reason, but her H was slowly dying and we think she needed the smoking to help keep her nerves down

  • My husband used it to quit when I first got pregnant.  First, it worked beautifully, and he has been a non-smoker for more than 2 years.  He tells me he hardly craves it now, because the drug made smoking no longer enjoyable.  He had vivid dreams, but no other negative side-effects.

  • DH took it awhile back. It made him feel loopy(hiswords) he had awful dreams and at times got semi depressed. He hated it and quit taking it. Eventually just quit on his own. He did say that it worked he just didn't liek the way it made him feel.

My Gpa said the same things about it

  • Thanks ladies! DH has tried patches and gum and such and not had success. I think the Dr. just had to mention the worst-case scenarios and it freaked him out. We'll talk some more about it tonight and see how he feels. Thanks!

  • My H used it to quit.  It gave him a gut ache if he took it without food and it did give him some issues with dreams, but worth it.  He still wants to smoke sometimes, but not because he CRAVES it, he just wants to because he LIKED smoking.

I agree with another poster who -- if the person is prone to depression it is probably not the best choice.  Otherwise, I'd say go for it!  (Also - with you as a watchful wife, you can always help keep an eye on him and if he is seeming depressed or acting odd in any way, you can always have him stop!)
