I'm pretty sure I've posted about this before, but the logistics of having Leo and Charlie in the same room are driving me insane. The room is 112 inches wide. because of the layout there is basically just one configuration possible for the beds, which is both headboards on the far side by the window, coming lengthwise towards the wall with the door and closet. The bed that I made for Leo (full size twin) is about 45 in wide. DH convinced me to make a second one for Charlie, so now I have 90 in of bed in 112 in of space. So once I put it together and get it in there, that will leave me with barely enough space to walk between the beds and room for absolutely nothing else in there, including any kind of dresser.
It's probably ridiculous how much I can't stand this, but I can't STAND IT. So now my new scheme is to scrap both twin beds for now and switch them to toddler beds. I found a toddler bed at Ikea that is about 30 in wide. So much more doable. But is that really feasible for Leo? He's a big boy (about 75th% for height and weight), would it be silly to buy this so he can sleep in it for a year before it's outgrown?
And then of course, there are bunk beds. Oh how I wish I could do bunk beds. I'm just not 100% sure about the safety for their ages. But I am so, so tempted. DH has already said no to a trundle bed so that is definitely out.
Re: How long can a kid be in a toddler bed?
what if you keep leo's twin bed and just do a toddler bed for charlie?
I'm going to ask an obvious question, but I just need to double check...
The room for Leo and Charlie is bigger than the nursery, right?
How is it possible that this didn't occur to me until this moment! ha!
Yeah they're pretty much the same size.
Remind me next time I buy a house to think ahead, measure, and get an extra bedroom.
eta: Okay I just went and remeasured, and the other room is actually about 5 inches wider. I'm trying to decide if that's enough to make a substantial difference or not. There would definitely still not be room for a dresser, but it would be nice to have more space between the beds.
They've never fallen out or anything? Ugggh I really want to do this, it would just solve every problem.
Kiarox - he doesn't think it's fair to Charlie. I think he's being silly but he doesn't have strong opinions on this sort of thing too often (besides, do whatever is cheapest), so I'm giving him this one.
Answer: a long time.
DS (5.5 years old!) is still in a toddler bed. At first, because his bed is cute (a train), then because of money (or lack thereof) and finally, he's still in a toddler bed because I haven't come up with a finalized plan for his "big boy room." I'm just a little behind, there. I just love his room so much, I'm dragging my feet on painting/re-doing and I haven't really seen a twin bed I like. If I hadn't found the cute train bed, we would have gone straight to the twin bed, so it's not that I think toddler beds are necessary at all. But, sometimes they are the best option for the family and in your case, I support it!
If the kids had to share the room in our old house, they would have both been in toddler beds. Even with just a crib in there, you had to scootch the crib back and forth if you wanted to open or close the closet door. I feel you with the small rooms.
We have H's dresser in his closet if that helps.
Ikea has a low loft bed that has a tent attachment as well as a big solid side. It's also flips to be a floor bed. it's only 41 winches wide. You could get two of them and only spend 82 inches instead of 90. One could be high and one could be low.

IDK if you have the space or are able to make the configuration, but could you make the 2 beds like a V, where one is against a wall and the other is perpendicular to it, against the adjoining wall and then in the space where the 2 headboards meet, you could put a bookcase or a night stand. Does that make sense? It's kinda what we'll do when the boys get bigger boy beds. Their room is long and not wide at all, so it doesn't give us many options for 2 bigger beds.
Oh, and I just put the boys to bed and actually paid attention to how much space is between their feet and the end of the bed, and I'd say they could probably use them for another 2-3 years!
Then I would tell him that Leo can have the top bunk and Charlie the bottom bunk. Of course, Leo will sleep on the trundle at night until he's a bit bigger. Then you have an extra bed for guests/ sleepovers when the boys are older. Win win.
I don't know the answer to your initial question , but like pp stated, we kept K1 in his twin bed and put a toddler bed in that room for K2 and it's working out really well for us, space-wise.
Now if you have any advice on how to get them to stop chattering and giggling until 10pm every night, sometimes even 10:30pm, I'll take it!
