Pregnant after a Loss

BP why are you so mean? - T & Ps please..

Well I went in today because my BP was high at the last appointment and they wanted me to come in for a two week check.  I have been monitoring it at home and it has been perfect.  However, this morning I was sick, which made me late and then they took my BP and it was high again.

So,my first option was taking a BP medication, Labetalol, and coming back in a week.  She wants me to monitor my BP during work and report those numbers to her next week.  Of course my second option was bed rest.  Since I don't have much time off of work and I know that my BP has been fine when I am not at the office I opted for the medication and check it next week.

I hope I made the right decision and that it goes down by next week. I don't like the idea of a medication for BP but I am trusting that they know what they are doing and I can't imagine going on bed rest this early.  So please send me some t&ps for a good appt next week and a smooth week this week.

  • Many T&Ps that your BP levels itself out without the help of medication and you have a great next appt.

I had one time where my BP shot up and fortunately it's leveled out and been great ever since. I think mellowing out and having some relax time for myself each night really helped. DH suggested it and so far, that little bit has really been helping.

I don't know if this would apply to you at all, but my SIL had to go on bed rest pretty early, and somehow it didn't count as time off from work - she was legally on short term medical disability, so her work didn't pay her, but she got state disability pay (it was less money for them, overall, but not a *ton* less), and then she was still able to have her regular paid *and* unpaid maternity leave after the baby came (on her due date, btw). Anyhow, just wanted to let you know that bed rest *might* be considered separate from your company's maternity policy, if it comes to that -- but I hope it doesn't!

  • Hugs!!  My BP started being all over the place at about that time (and usually the highest at the OB's office, go figure) so I ended up on bed rest at 24 weeks once I started developing some mild pre-e symptoms too.  It was definitely scary to be going through all of that so early, but over time things have really settled down and my BP is back to being predictable and the pre-e symptoms are under control.  My doctor said there's some sort of hormonal shift going on at 20 weeks that brings this BP stuff on, so here's hoping the meds help get things under control quickly and you'll be back to normal soon!

  • Sending T&P your way.  When I was pregnant with DD, if the OB's office took my BP immediately after I sat down (after weighing in), it was high.  However, when they would wait and take a resting BP 5-10 minutes later, it was fine with the exception of 1 occasion which landed me in triage for monitoring.  Thankfully, it went back to normal while in triage and I didn't have to be medicated.  Hopefully you have a similar experience and your BP stays under control.

  • BP issues are so hard.  I ended up with PIH when I had my DS and I've been monitoring my BP this whole pregnancy too.

I have very similar issue where my BP is always high at the doctor's office.  As such, I take my BP at home twice a day.  I bought a monitor and then took it to the doctor with me for one appointment to confirm that the readings from my monitor were accurate.  You might try something similar, if you believe that you are just having "white coat" syndrome.

  • Ts, Ps and low BP wishes.  Hope all is well.

  • boo to BP issues. Mine spiked at 34 weeks with DS and remained up there until I was induced at 38 with official pre-E.

They can do bloodwork and check your pee for protein if they are really worried about pre-E though. Without high protein, it's likely just high BP---which could be a fluke, or could be a pre-cursor to an actual problem.

I went on bedrest for 2 days when mine spiked and then of course it came back down. But then I did work until the end and probably pushed it a little too much---I think meds are a good option as long as they are still watching you closely.

If you were stressed about getting to the appt on time that would totally affect your BP. Mine would always be high there b/c I would just get so nervous about it all---checking at home is the best way.

    Good luck!

  • I hear ya girl...I have always had low bp and now I have already been pulled out of work....(I work from home part time for now), but am not aloud to go into the office.  I have weekly appts w/ my OB until the baby is born and I have to monitor my BP 2x a day at home.

I saw a nurse practitioner this morning because my OB is out of town this week and she did not like how my lower number has been in the higher range....she modified my working from home and had me re-do all my lab work this am until my appt with my OB next week.

It's funny when you think about it because with the stress of worrying about it all how are we supposed to keep our BP down?! Stick out tongue

Hope this next week goes smoothly for you and your bp behaves!

  • If it makes you feel any better, I've been taking Labetalol since 18 weeks and have had no problems.

Also, they have had some excellent studies done lately that show Labetalol does not have adverse effects on baby.  Good luck to you!
