Does you family have a plan of action if your home alarm goes off in the middle of the night? I guess first you have to have an alarm and set it at night for this to be relevant.
We had a false alarm a while ago and realized that we had no plan in place if woken n the middle of the night by our alarm/an intruder. So DH and I got an idea of a better plan of action. This morning before we were up, it happened again...a patio door wasn't fully latched after grilling last night and the wind blew it open, causing our alarm to go off. Our response was definitely better thought out and improved from last time...but still...
A couple of disclaimers: I'm sure the idea of an intruder is crazy to some of you. I'm not paranoid about this but it has happened in our neighborhood, we live on the edge of a really crappy area, and both DH and I had our homes broken into when we were little, so this isn't just fully crazy talk. Secondly, we will be latching that garage door this weekend so it can't occur again.
Do you have a plan for this sort of event?
Re: Do you have a plan of attack? (literally, I suppose)
First of all, I don't think it's a bit crazy. We're in a pretty safe area, but still, things happen. I think it's important to be prepared, especially when there's a LO in the house.
Second of all, no, we really don't have a plan. Our house came with an alarm system installed, but we don't have it active. Since having DS, I lay awake sometimes and mentally plan out what I would do if someone broke in. It was easier when DS slept in our room, but now it involves me going upstairs and either hiding in the closet with DS or climbing out his bedroom window onto the garage roof. Yes, I lose sleep. Yes, we need an active system.
We have a security system. If the alarm goes off, we're getting a call from ADT, and we'll likely tell them to get the police over ASAP.
During that time, DH will probably be trying to remember where his gun is, then his ammo, and finding a large stick to hit someone with.
Well, to be honest, I have a loaded gun next to my bed. Obviously, with a baby coming, that will change... To what I'm not sure. We have talked about getting a dog. Hopefully we will move before the baby is old enough that guns are an issue.
A friend of a friend was held hostage at gun point along with his roommates a week or so ago. Here's an article about it: They live pretty close to me and at the base of a city park I've been to alone many times over the years.

I live in a pretty safe neighborhood, but there are a lot of meth addicts in this city (including my neighbor). I don't want to be all judge-y about people who have addiction issues, but I am seriously scared of a tweaker breaking into my house.
We don't have an alarm system. We do have a pretty ferocious cat though
No seriously, thank you for reminding me that this IS something we should talk about!
We live in a townhouse, so someone would have to break in at the front door (Facing 2 houses) or lower level windows/ sliding door (facing the street, with neighbors motion lights on). We sleep with cell phones next to the bed. One of us would call police and the other would grab the kids. We lock ourselves in our bedroom. Worse case scnerio we'd probably put the kids up the attic access point in our closet.
House break-ins here are extremely rare. Most of the crime is things stolen from unlocked cars.
We don't have a plan, don't have an alarm and aren't really concerned. We do need to be better about making sure we lock the door at night
I do monitor the local police blotter and when there is a break-in, they always seem to be in the middle of the day when no one is home. The large majority of crimes committed in this area are retail theft at Kohl's and DUI
Not that that stuff matters, I know things can happen anywhere. But we were kind of the same way when we lived in the city, except I made sure our door was locked every night

We're in a rural area where our neighbors are quite a ways down the road. Our back yard is also wooded. It would be so easy for some weirdo to wander through the woods, break into our home, and no one in the area would know that anything was going on. DH is out of town on business quite often while I'm home with the girls and that scares the crap out of me. I've already told him that one of our projects this year will be to get a security system installed.
