I know it's late, but it's slow here today. So here's something to read and remind us all of how lucky we are to have our beautiful healthy babies.
I used to work in a PICU that mostly cared for children after solid organ transplant surgeries. That's liver, kidney, pancreas & small bowel, often all four to five at the same time. I still follow the blog of a very special little girl that's been through, well everything. You can read her home page for her mom's overview of what has been an incredible 5 years of survival.
This is her New Year's entry and I thought it was very cool what happened to them over Christmas (her first not in a hospital since she was born). Warning it's a long entry, but her mom is a very good writer.
Re: A cool Christmas story
She is a very good writer. What an amazing experience. I couldnt even imagine.
Wow- that was awesome to read. A great writer and such an inspiring story.
One of my nephews has been fighting cancer for almost 2 years. He was diagnosed at age 2 1/2. The outpouring of love and gifts that I have seen for them has been amazing. The did their Make-A-Wish trip to Disney World back in the fall. It sounds like it was amazing. He was in the hospital on Christmas Day 2010 - when my SIL went out the door to run to her van to get his 'Santa' gifts to bring them in she almost tripped over two huge sacks of toys -one for him and one for his older sister. I am pleased to say that he is off chemo and his scans over the past 6 months have shown no evidence of disease (he gets scans every 6 weeks).
Through my SIL we have been 'introduced' to so many other families fighting similar battles and it breaks my heart everytime I hear that one of those families has lost their child to cancer.
As I sit here sobbing all I can picture is the look on that little girls face when Belle came to visit her. Such a sweet little girl and a wonderful gift for her and her family.
My sister is a liver transplant recipient and it has been twenty-two years. A long, rough twenty-two years but she's here and healthy so it was all worth it. My heart hurts everytime I see a story like this...but I know that I can help by being a organ donor.
Amazing news about your nephew! I hope he remains cancer free and has a long joyful life. There really are so many people out there with huge hearts willing to help and bring a smile to someone struggling.
I had no idea about your sister. She sounds like a trooper. A transplant 22 years ago! geez
You are so right, everyone can help by being an organ donor. There are so many children and adults waiting for that most amazing gift.
