When did you/Will you or won't you...

I have a 30 minute drive to work, and I'm feeling like it's getting time that I may want to have a set of towels along for the ride. I know that it's very unlikely that I have my water break at work, but would still like to be prepared anyway with towels and a change of clothes. When did/will you have this available? Would you stick it in there already just to be safe?

  • I have about an hour drive to work - I was just thinking yesterday that I need to do this..

  • I hear you should forget the change of clothes. Your water just keeps leaking after the first break. But, maybe it would be more comfortable.

  • Good idea--I hadn't even thought of this.  I would say maybe a change of clothes and a few big pads if you don't want to look like you wet your pants :)

  • I was thinking about the change of clothes the other day.   I think I'll bring along a change of clothes and some pads.

  • I have a towel in my car, but that's probably about as far as I'll go. If my water breaks at work, I'm probably just going to go home, not change and get back to whatever I was doing.

  • I was planning on putting a trash bag down under the towel.  We have a new car and I really don't want it to get it all wet and yuggy if possible.

I haven't done this yet, mostly because this baby is way up in my ribs and I really can't imagine that I'm anywhere close to labor.

  • yeah, the change of clothes isn't to go back to work, but just to be more comfortable. I wish I had a skirt I could easily put in the car since I know the flow won't stop. I'm ALWAYS in pants at work and would feel really uncomfortable without the option to change should it be a gush :-)

Good idea about the trashbag too. I just had my car detailed yesterday, so will definitely be adding that to the gear!

  • I am in my car alot for work, going here and there. I worry about making my seat nasty with a big gush of breaking water.

After I reach full term I will put some towels in my car, I have also thought of putting a puppy pad on my seat or a trash bag.

I am using puppy pads instead of a mattress cover at home under my sheets, they are super absorbant and less expensive.

  • I just thought about putting a towel in my car yesterday! Didn't think about the change of clothes, though. Good ideas!

  • My plan was to already have this at my office.  So I should get on that soon.  One PITA is I don't have a lot of maternity clothes and so it's hard to give up a pair of pants to stash at work.

We'll also have towels and a wee wee pad and/or trash bag in my husband's car (the one we'd take for the 30 - 60 minute drive home or to the hospital).  In the words of my doula, "It will smell funky and you will need your car detailed if it gets all over the seat."

  • These are all good ideas that I havent thought about! I think I'll pack a towel and trash bag this week. I drive a half hour for work too - and if it happens en route, I'm turning around. If it happens at work, I'm just straight out leaving. My students are refugees from other countries and I'm sure they've seen a lot worse than water breaking (and truly would know what was happening if it did break in front of them - they've seen it all!)

  • All my my friends who are already mommies advised me to keep a change of comfortable clothes in the car b/c you never know when you'll go into labor and you'll want something other than your work clothes. And as long as you have room in your car, why not? It certainly couldn't hurt, right? As far as timing, they say to have your hospital bag packed at 35 weeks so that is probably a good time.
  • I drive 30 min to work and I've already done this. You never know!

  • I am supposed to do it from 36 weeks on based on birth center guidelines.  But I've been bad and haven't done it yet!!! :P
