C-sections

Questions about the bag- TIA!

Hi Ladies,

I had a homebirth with my first and have been planning another with this one, however since my LO has comfortably been breech for quite a while now (despite the many things I have done to flip her), I have decided to go ahead and make a plan for a c-section at the hospital if she decides not to turn.

Since my reason for going to the hospital is specifically for a c-section, I thought this board would be the most helpful in letting me know what I should really pack in "the bag."

Is there anything specific to this type of birth I should pack?  Also, I saw a lot of people said to get some granny panties...I was just wondering  if I should buy maternity ones or regular?  I have to laugh if it is the maternity ones because I have gotten through two pregnancies without buying them and it would be too funny if I had to get them now...but if they are the most comfortable, I am down.

I BF my first and am all prepared on that front.  I am just looking for suggestions for items that would help make me feel more comfortable.  I have to admit I am feeling quite anxious since this was never really in my realm of thought before.

TIA!

  • I didn't worry about granny panties so much because my hospital gave me the mesh undies too.  They stretched enough that they didn't rub the incision site.  I brought my boppy - if you use one - and that helped so much.

I can't think of anything that specifically helped after the c/s.  I will say that getting up and moving, even if it is hobbling to the bathroom, helped me recover faster.  The more you can move the better.

    Good luck.

  • I bought a couple pairs of pajamas that were loose fitting and the pants had an elastic band so that I could put it over the incision as opposed to sitting on top of it. I also brought my bathrobe.

outside of that I don't think I brought anything that I couldn't have lived without.

  • The only thing I used from my hospital bag was my house coat so I could walk the halls since they make you do this in order to relieve gas build up, socks and my clothes to go home... I packed lots of stuff but didn't use most of them...waste of space! Need clothes for LO to go home in too. Camera that's about it!

  • I didn't wear granny panties. I bought cotton boyshorts from target and they were really comfy. I also packed my boppy pillow, sweats, yoga pants, toliteries and my own pillows.

  • Wow -- it sounds like for going from a home birth to a c-section you're handling it remarkably well.  I'm really impressed.  I had an unplanned c-section but I didn't feel like I needed anything special in my hospital bag.  I wore pajama pants starting the second day and felt fine.  I used hospital underwear until discharge and then just bought some Hanes underwear one up from my normal size and they fit fine.  I used a boppy pillow to breast feed and used the football hold instead of cross cradle for the first few weeks until my incision wasn't so painful.  Good luck!

  • don't bring panties to the hospital.  They provide the mesh ones which fit with the industrial sized pads they give you for ppbleeding.  Those pads are HUGE!  Bring one pair of jammies, I brought two and it was too many.  I only put them on when people came to visit. I'm wishing I woudl have just stayed in the hospital gown and in bed when they visited because then they might not have stayed so long.  I had a really bad recovery and was in there 5 days.  Don't forget a hairbrush, my hospital provided a toothbrush, and i brought my own pillow.  And don't forget to pack your signficant other.  My husband stayed at the hospital with me for the full five days and I was so thankful for that.

  • I wore the gigantic mesh panties they had in the hospital. I also stayed in my hospital gown the whole time. I know others prefer their own clothes. I just got Hanes underwear in the giant brief cut. Also, yoga pants. Anything that fits above the incision should be fine.

Also, bring your own toiletries. I was happy to have my own shampoo and body wash and my poof!  The boppy was also nice to hold LO up off of my incision when BFing. I had a hard time getting the football hold down. I was a hospital transfer, so I had to send DH and my mom back and forth for everything I forgot!

    Good luck!

  • For specifically c-section births I would say the most important thing is no tight bottoms and no low rise anything.  I wasn't prepared for a c-section or even to have a baby (water broke at 32 weeks) so I had a half packed hospital bag.  The under belly undies and pjs I had been wearing pregnant that people brought for me in the hospital were a no no.  In fact gowns were the way to go and I wore the hospital gown until I was discharged, as I expected I would for a normal birth.  Everyone talks about the incision but no one told me how swollen my whole belly would be.  Loose and flowy was most comfortable. Also good stable shoes/slippers.  Walking when you feel like your guts are going to fall out is hard enough; doing it with slippery shoes you're going to trip over is not a good idea.

I hope the baby turns and you don't have to worry about it though!

  • I packed a huge bag, and used nothing from it! The only thing I used were my toiletries, and my sports bra (which you won't need since you're BFing).  I used their silly underwear, and their pads, and their hospital gown.

I do, however, recommend your own pillow.  That makes a world of difference!

  • Thanks everyone!

Thanks, but I am not really.  I just find being prepared helps with the anxiety more than doing nothing. :)

  • I know a lot of the ladies are suggesting the mesh panties from the hospital but for me they were itchy and uncomfortable! I would do what pp said and get hanes undies a size up.
