NBR: Best way to get rid of dust?

Ladies, how do you combat dust (techniques, products, etc.)? Because seriously, I could dust every day and there would still be dust in this freaking house. Maybe it's the fact that we just moved in and the dust is still literally settling but we also had a dust problem at our last house, despite having a maid who came every two weeks. It's making me crazy!

Maybe your ducts need cleaning?  I know that's our problem, but so far it hasn't fit in the budget. It's pricey.

We need to do this too.  We do buy expensive filters and change then once a month, even if they're 3 month filters, and that seems to help.  Filtrete I think?

FWIW, our a/c guy told us not to buy the super expensive (i.e., high-filtration) filters.  He said they don't do that much more good and they lower the efficiency of your system.  Since we started buying the cheap ones and changing them often, our a/c doesn't freeze up anymore.

Huh.  When we use the regular blue filters there's hardly a speck of dust on them, but the Filtretes come out FILLED in dust.  Weird.

  • Good air filters and changing often definitely makes a difference for us.

  • I started using pledge and it makes a world of difference. I'm down to dusting once a week at most. You can use it on surfaces other than wood. I know some people don't like using chemicals though, I'm not one of those people.

Our guy told us they lower the efficiency too...so as long as there wasn't bad allergies it wasn't worth it. But...I have bad allergies, so it was hardnadvice o take. I think it was because the better filters make it harder for the system to suck in air to cool...thus making it work harder.

  • You can actually put car wax on your wood furniture and it helps keep the dust from sticking.  You still need to dust but it ends up just being a quick swipe instead of a more thorough process.  I use Pledge, too, at least once every couple weeks on our wood furniture and then Swiffer Dusters about once a week.

I just bought a duster attachment for my Dyson (for dusting the ceiling fans and bookshelves) but haven't had a chance to give it a go.

I have a reminder on my calendar to change our air filters every 60 days.  I'm too cheap to do it more often.
