Flu shot or not to flu shot???

Would love to hear what some women are doing???

Re: Flu shot or not to flu shot???

  • I declined it since I'm a sahm and ds and I rarely go out since it's so cold out anyway. I got it with my first pregnancy since I was teaching and exposed to craploads of germs daily!

  • I got mine about 2 months before I got pregnant. My OB highly recommended getting one. If you get one, just make sure it is preservative free.

  • I've never had a flu shot, I have never had the flu, I declined with my first pregnancy and I plan on declining again
  • I have also never had the flu shot or the flu and declined while TTC. I'm not sure if I will get one now or not.

  • My OB told me both DH and I both had to get one once I was PG. I got one a few months ago so I'm good.

  • I agree aurora! Since I've never had one it would be a completely foreign substance to my body and I honestly think it would do more harm than good
  • I've never had the flu and never got a shot until..I was pregnant.  I wanted to protect DD for the winter since she couldn't get one and I got another this winter before I got KU.  I also will try to get one before the baby is born if the newest versions are available in time.

  • I haven't received the flu shot in over 8 years and I'm an RN on a busy floor in a hospital.  The hospital and my managers especially preach constantly for all of us, especially the pregnant girls to get their flu shot.  The funniest thing, last year and this year.....those who got their flu shot were out sick for at least a week.  Those of us who did not get the flu shot either didn't get sick at all, or it was a 24hr bug.  I was very pregnant last flu season with DD.  I didn't get the flu shot.  I did get what I'm sure was a strain of the flu....fever, body aches....and it lasted exactly 24 hours and then gone!  I declined last year while pregnant and will continue to politely decline :).

  • I too am an RN on a busy (pediatric) floor in a hospital and I get my flu shot every year. And FWIW, I had the flu once and was completely miserable so for me it is worth it (I also have Asthma and so it was pretty scary).

My advice OP is to have a talk with your medical provider and do your own research, then make the best decision for you. FWIW, the American Association of OBGYNs recommends that every pregnant women get the flu vaccine.

And, when I say "research", I don't mean reading articles on the internet from questionable sources.

That being said, there are some contraindications (such as an allergy to eggs) so you need to have the discussion on if it is right for you.

  • i'm one of "those" people that believe we are an over-vaccinated culture. I have never gotten a flu shot, even when an employer tried to force one upon me. it is my body, and i will be the only one that decides what goes in it. I haven't had the flu since i was in high school. and i am sure if i did get the vaccine i would probably get more sick than not getting it. i will just continue to eat healthy and fight off any small bug that i may catch.

  • I have never had a flu shot and I am allergic to many many things, so I have declined it every year. I have not gotten the flu as an adult. I will not get it now that I am KU.

    Kid #2 - maybe???

  • I have not had a flu shot since I was a kid so I was not planning on getting one while pregnant (not sure how I would react). I am going to ask my OB for his advise when I go in to meet him on Feb 2nd but I have a feeling I wont end up changing my mind

  • Nope. Never have, never will.
  • When I was PG in October my OB wanted me to get one but to wait until 2nd tri. After my loss I never got around to it and now really wish I'd done it before getting pregnant again. By the time I hit 2nd tri this time around flu season will be over.

I'm one of those people, too.  I won't be getting one.

  • I teach kindergarten and would not dream if going a winter without! I have had the flu in the past and there are few things worse in the world...

  • I've already gotten mine this year, as has DS, which was fortunate because we were exposed to the flu at Thanksgiving by a relative who hadn't started exhibiting symptoms yet. She ended up in the hospital.

  • Got one before getting pregnant as part of preperation. It was my first and honestly this winter I've felt better than ever. I haven't come down with anything that's gone around and I usually do! I'm sold on them!
