April 2012 Moms

anyone planning on working past their due date?

I'm a nurse so I only work three days a week (12 hr days).  My due date is April 13 and our schedule goes until 4/21 so i'm contemplating letting my boss schedule me until the end of that schedule.  I have a secret motive - I want to be off work until after the 4th of July.....  Obviously I dont know when i'll actually deliver, just curious to see if anyone else is planning on working past their due date??

Re: anyone planning on working past their due date?

  • Yep, as long as I don't have any medical indication not to. Every day I work is one more day I get paid. No state disability for federal employees!

  • Don't do that.  Odds are, you are not going to be able to work 12's a week past your due date and you are just going to mess with everyone else's schedules when they have to cover for you.  You will get 6 weeks off from the time you deliver so if you do go that late, you will still get the 4th off.

ETA: I do plan on working until I deliver and don't have a set leave day, but I don't work on a schedule that affects other people.  They work the same hours whether I'm here or not.

  • If he's still comfy in there I'll be at work! I'm due the 5th and tentatively on the schedule for the weekend of the 6th and 7th.

  • I'm a nursing assistant and definitely planning on doing the same.  Right now I'm just working part time, and picking up some hours here and there, but I'm definitely planning to work until I deliver, unless there's some medical reason that I can't.

  • I'm a nurse also. I plan to work until I deliver, whenever that may be!
  • I am hoping to work as long as possible to have the most paid time off with Chloe. I am also a nurse but will definitely be off until August (no matter when I go out) so the longer I work before, the more time off I get paid. I would say if you are a FTM there is a decent chance that you could go a week past your due date- I think each OB is a little different about how long they let you go (also, depending on the baby's size). Have you asked your OB their thougths about past dates?

  • I'm a teacher and I can't take paid leave before my due date, so I'm working at least until then (or until baby comes)...and if I go overdue, I'll likely keep working because I only get 3 weeks paid leave and the closer I can get to summer break, the better.

  • I will work until I deliver. But I work an office job. If I were a nurse and on my feet for 12 hours, I probably wouldn't.

ditto, I want to save every possible day of Leave until the baby comes. So if she is late I'm working until I can't anymore.

  • I was contemplating making my due date the last day of work. I'm due Good Friday, 4/6 which would be nice to have Easter off. I also have this fear of going into labor at work.

My co-worker just convinced me not to do this and work right up until labor because then I'll have more time with the baby at home, instead of just by myself.

  • I'm a teacher and my due date is the first Monday of our Spring Break, so I plan on working through the Friday before (which is a teacher work day, yay!). I'm also hoping baby plans on staying inside for a few extra days since my maternity leave starts the day I have the baby- never mind that it is a vacation/no school. So ideally I will work until March 30th, then have a week at home to get ready for baby, then deliver Apr 9.

  • I had to turn in a letter with a date that would be my final day of work. My due date is April 12.  I asked my OB and she said I'd only be allowed to go one week past my due date and then would be induced.. So I put April 19 as my last day.

I can always adjust and go earlier, obviously. I just don't want to be sitting around wasting my 6 weeks of sick days for a whole week if I don't have to!

  • I am a nurse also...they take me off the schedule 2 weeks before my due date so I don't negatively affect staffing if I am not there, however I just can call in everyday and add myself to schedule so that I can work up until :-)

I plan to work right up until so I can also have off into mid-July.  Hoping LO here holds on until April 15th!  It's a summer off!

  • I am another one who is planning on working as long as possible. One of my collegues has just completed her nursing training (she is still with us as her nursing position starts in September) so she says she'll be on 'when does Mary need to go to the hospital' watch!

  • I am lucky that I get an extra 2 weeks paid that I can only take before my due date, I can't add it on at the end. However I am worried if I take off 2 weeks before my due date I will go late. I'll probably take off 1 week before, or on the due date according to what my OB suggests when it gets closer.

  • I plan to work until I deliver as well.  I work at the hospital where I'm delivering, so even better if it happens when I'm at work...then I won't be worried about getting to the hospital 'in time.'  I would imagine that they will schedule me a lighter patient load around my due date so that when I do go, my coworkers can accomodate my patients into their schedules.

  • Luckily I live in California, so disability will pay you at least 4 weeks before the due date. It's a use it or lose it type of thing, so if you don't use it, you don't get to add it on after the baby is born. I don't see why anyone that lives here wouldn't take advantage of that.
