Babies: 9 - 12 Months

4 days with no bottles, no nursing

DS has an ear infection and he has refused to nurse or take a bottle for 4 days now. He's on antibiotics and we've given motrin for the pain, but he is still throwing a fit every time a bottle or boob come near him. He'll sip a little water from a sippy, but not BM. He will take BM on a spoon, so we've been spoon feeding all his BM to make sure he is hydrated and getting enough calories. Oh, and he's also in a spitting phase, which makes it so much more fun. I can't keep doing this. I've been through ear infections and nursing strikes with DS1, but everything DS2 does is much more dramatic than his brother. This child is really making me rethink my plans for LO#3. Has anyone dealt with this before? Please tell me it will be over soon.

You might want to take him back in to have his ears re-checked to make sure the antibiotics are working. Our pedi said that the meds for ear infections should start to make a difference after three days, otherwise a stronger antibiotic might be needed.
Today was day 3 of the antibiotics. If tomorrow isn't any better I'm calling the pedi. I'm concerned that his ears are better but he's associated sucking with pain. That's going to be harder to deal with.

  • We used a syringe when dd wouldn't take a bottle (and I wasn't here to nurse).  Might be a little faster than a spoon.  GL to you!

  • Can you put BM in the sippy?

I hear ya on 2 making you rethink having a 3rd. I definitely want a 3rd but its nothing but chaos right now, sooooo #3 might be a little further down the line than I had initially thought!  Now I'm thinking maybe when DS1 is in school instead of like next year!  haha

  • I would call your doctor and get in ASAP. Our pedi said if LO ever refused the bottle/boob to get in to be seen.

We took him to urgent care last Thursday after 24 hours of refusing bottles & boobs. He got the ear infection diagnosis and meds. He has been well hydrated, so they weren't too worried about the refusal since they knew why he was refusing.
