"Our families are team green" ...?

In the Team Green v. Finding Out post below, a couple people said they will be finding out the sex but not telling anyone.  Why do people do this?  I am not trying to be snarky; I truly do not understand the thinking here and I'm curious.  It makes sense to me when people say they aren't sharing the baby's NAME until the birth, because they don't want to be criticized for their choice or they simply don't care to hear others' opinions on it.  But what is the point of keeping the SEX a secret?

  • We aren't finding out, but if a tech slips or we end up knowing, I would consider not telling people because I have no interest in being inundated with gender-specific items - particularly if we are having a girl.  My MIL has, for each of her three granddaughters, tried to impose a princess theme, buy everything pink and ruffled etc.  Not ok.

  • I'm thinking about doing this because I don't want all blue or all pink stuff. But, I haven't really decided.

  • I think it is just about keeping a secret between you and H and then surprising people.

  • personally, if someone buys me clothing that I do not care for...I will just EXCHANGE IT!   If it doesnt have a tag, WALMART takes anything back! hahahaha

  • For us it was a compromise. I wanted to know what we were having but dh wanted to be team green. This way he still gets to go into the waiting room and announce the sex but I get to plan before our lo is here.

  • We are also planning of finding out but keeping a secret for a while. I think we will probably announce at the baby shower. I like the idea of having it be a secret between DH and I. I also don?t want people to go crazy buying pink or blue stuff since we are doing a gender neutral nursery anyway.

  • We are doing this because my side of the family doesn't want to know. I don't want to tell some people and it get back to my family and ruin the surprise for them.

This is us, too. I wanted team green, but DH wanted to find out. Since he doesn't get to "do much" as far as the pregnancy goes, we found out. However, I still want to have the "big announcement" when the baby is born.

We won't be letting the family/friends know that we know though - they would torture us! Additionally, getting non-gender-specific gifts is also a plus.

We are finding out but keeping the sex a secret for two reasons: 1.) it's so much more exciting to call after the birth to let people know the sex then just to say we had a baby.  Seems like more to tell.  2.) I personally do not want a bunch of gender-specific gifts at the baby shower.  It's wierd I know but I just couldn't stand everyone knowing we were having a girl and then giving us a whole bunch of pink frilly things.  I would rather get a bunch of utilitarian onesies, bibs etc. that I can use b/c honestly the baby doesn't care what it's going to throw up on.

I know plenty of people may find plenty to criticize about my post and my choice, but that's exactly what it is, my choice.  I'm not telling people the sex to be spiteful.  I have reasons that matter to me and that's all that counts. I hope that helps!

  • For me, keeping the sex a secret minimizes pink princess t-shirts and little diva bibs.  I personally prefer yellows, greens, giraffes, turtles and ducks.  I have the type of family that if I say "It's a..." but please stick to the unisex gifts, they won't listen.

I think I may do a reveal cake or something at the shower if I find that people really want to know.
