Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

How gross is your daycare?

My kids have been in this daycare for about 3 months (before that they were home with a nanny) and I feel like they are sick ALL THE TIME. In the short time they've been there they've been exposed to chicken pox (mine had just had their vaccination, didn't catch it), had pinkeye, had "hoof in mouth", and at least 3 colds (actually I feel like the noses have been running since day 1).  Is this normal? It's completely grossing me out.

Re: How gross is your daycare?

  • I've never heard of the "bomb"...will definitely ask. My thing is, the  kid that started"hoof in mouth" (I can't remember the real name of it) wasn't even in their classroom, so they didn't tell the parents in my class to be on the lookout for it. Which is completely stupid b/c the teachers rotate in/out of all the classes when a teacher goes on break or lunch or whatever. So they spread it themselves.

  • That is pretty normal for your kids to get sick when they start daycare.  I was worried about it before my DD started and a coworker told me to either deal with it now or deal with it when she starts school.  They have to get their immunity built up at some point.
  • The first time they are exposed to other kids, they are bound to get sick.  Whether it is daycare or school.  They need to build up immuniities.

So chances are if they weren't in daycare and getting sick now, they would be getting sick the minute they hit pre-school or KG.  It is inevitable.   So, hopefully they will build up immnitiy now, and then when thy hit school age, won't be sick as often.

Also, as a teacher...I am always sick in the beginning of the year b/c I have to build up a tolerance to my new set of kids.  But after a weeks, I am tolerant to them, and don't get sick again the rest of the year.  So, hopefully, your LO's will start to get immune to the kids around them soon and and you will see a decrease in their illnesses.

I have already seen a decrease in LO's illness compared to last year.  He has been out once this year, last year, it was more like 8 times.

  • Everyone warned me they would get sick...and I know putting all those kids together in one place will expose them to all sorts of crap. I just didn't think it would be so constant....it's just one thing right after the other. I feel like they don't even have the chance to feel good before they are sick again
  • LO had a chronic stuffy nose from Oct to March last year.  I promise it does get better.

  • My oldest was at the doc for something at least every 2 weeks while in DC which is why I started to SAH.  We've had pink eye and chicken pox in the last month anyway.
  • First of all, it's not hoof in mouth unless your kid is an animal.  What you are referring to is hand, food and mouth.

Secondly, by the time a child with HFM displays the signs of having it, they've been contagious for almost a week.

Third, You took your children from basically a bubble and put them with just about every germ known to man, they will get sick and be sick for awhile as they cycle through the various contagious illnesses.  It sucks, but they'll get through it.

Last but not least, it's not likely the teachers passing it around as much as it is siblings.  For example, HFM goes around in the infant rooms and those babies have older siblings in various age-rooms (2, 3, and 4 year olds) who then come from home with HFM and spread it to their classmates before anyone knows they are sick.

I think out of the entire system the teachers are the least likely to spread the illnesses.

If you think your DC is "Gross" and the teachers don't know how to wash their hands, why did you pick that one to put your kinds in?

He's the single greatest thing I've done in my life and reminds me daily of how fun (and funny) life can be.  He's turned out pretty swell for having such a heartless and evil mother.

  • ear infections, snotty noses, coughing, etc. are no strangers to us.  However, she hasn't contracted any major illness.  They work very hard to keep things sanitary, but you know, they're germy kids.

  • DS started daycare when he was about 7 months old.  He has had a runny nose pretty much constantly since then.  We have also had hand, foot and mouth and stomach bug.  We just went through a 3 week run with no runny nose ( one week of that was Christmas vaca) and we were pretty psyched with that.  I think it is completely normal.  Think about it... no matter how much DC cleans the toys when the babies go home, they spend all day putting things in their mouths and then just passing it on to the next babe....no wonder they are always sick!

    Snort! Lol

ETA: also, I think that's too much. I understand kids get sick at daycare, but my LO and my niece  started the same date, different places. She is sick ALL the time. My guy has a runny nose here and there (sighs, and currently has RSV.., but I don't think it was from daycare, no one their is sick) and a couple ear infections I'm pretty sure had to do with teething.

Both have been in for almost a year.  Both are at home, but she does have many more kids with her. LO is one of 6

  • Well, my daycare is cleaned professionally every night - there are always sick children there, but it's not the daycare's fault - it's the parents.  I like to think that I am considerate enough to keep DD out of daycare when she is sick or has run a fever.  Most parents are not the same.  I will say that if a child has a fever or is otherwise sick (not a cold, but "sick") the child has to leave.

  • Alex gets colds all the time, got roseola (pretty much on time for his age. It's a fact of life in DC. Mine is a very good center with great ratings they clean every day.

    It's just gonna happen.

Look at it this way, they are building their immune system.

  • Tegan was sick from October till March/April of last year. She pretty much had a constant cough, runny nose and missed, at least, one day of daycare almost every week between October and March. The upside??

This year, Tegan's only been sick twice. She had Hand, Foot and Mouth in the beginning of September and had a cough/cold that took awhile to clear up, about a month ago. Since that last cold/cough, she's managed to stay pretty healthy. I'm sure we'll have another illness or two this year, but I also know that it'll get better every year. No matter how "clean" a daycare may be kids are still going to get sick and spread germs, it's just a simple fact.

  • We have had 2 GI viruses.  One of them landed me in the hospital when I was 26 weeks pregnant.  The other spread to every single person in my family and some extended family, it was horrible.  No colds though.
