You could even make them colored - add a drop or 2 of food coloring to a large pitcher of water then pour into the mold. voila! Fancy Ditto PP's that the cake would fall apart when removing from these trays. AND they'd be a major pain to frost. (sorry )
those molds are great for making candies/chocolates as cupcake toppers. I used one like this for A's last party. I made lego brick cupcake toppers using the candy melts you can find at Hobby Lobby or Joannes. I also used a similar mold and made crayons as part of the favors. Both really easy to do.

can you just make a sheet cake and use a cookie cutter to cut out the 1's? maybe you could even make it thinner by putting one cake mix into two pans
