50's housewife ideas? (NBR)

Ok I promise I won't keep bugging you all about this, but I finally think I've decided on a theme for my future SIL's bridal shower: 50's housewives!  From what I've found on Google it looks like this is a somewhat popular theme in the last couple years, but I've never been to one of these showers or even heard of it being used as a theme.  Neither have the three other bridesmaids, so maybe it's just regionally popular?  Have any of you been to a 50's housewife shower?  How was it?  Anyone have ideas or suggestions for food, decorations, games?  (I left it up to the bride whether or not we'll have games, because I know some people love them and some people hate them.  She said she would like to have a few.)  Thanks so much for your help!

  • Maybe get fake pearl necklaces for all the guests or something?
  • Loading the player...
  • maybe the bridesmaids wear cutesy aprons and get a special one for the bride

  • There is a game out there that is really funny. I never played it, but it's based on a home ec textbook from the 50's that describes how to be a good wife. It's hilarious. I bet you can find it if you google it. I actually keep a copy of the list of things a "good wife" is supposed to do just as a joke.

Things like.... always have your husband's favorite cocktail ready for him when he returns home from work. Also, keep the children quiet so that he can have a few minutes to relax after returning home from a long day's work. Don't bother him with your mundane chatter, he prefers quiet relaxation. HA!

     Good luck!

  • Never seen this theme but absolutely LOVE it!!

  • Thanks for all the ideas ladies!  I think I found the game that's based on the "guidelines" for being a good wife.  As soon as I told my grandma the theme, she immediately started working on an apron for FSIL!  :)  I would love to figure out a way to work aprons into the rest of the shower though, either as a game, or as favors if I could find a way to get/make them cheap enough.  Thanks again!

  • I actually had a bridal shower like that for my wedding!  My friend had a bunch of people make pies (as well as other snack food), and folks that had cool aprons wore them.  We played a game where there were a list of couples from classic TV shows and see who could recognize/remember the most.

Love the jello mold idea!  And mar/mock-tinis would be fun, too ;)

  • Oh dear!! Obviously I did not do it right as they are humongous! lol. Someday I will figure it out!

But the shower and idea were really fun! We played some silly games, had a 50s music playlist going,  had lots of 50s inspired food- pigs in a blanket, jello molds, fruit kabobs, fruit dip, etc! And the champagne bar my friend created , chilling conveniently in my pink kitchenaid was a hit! Mostly everyone dressed in theme and if they don't maybe someone can supply cute aprons for the non dresser uppers to wear?
